How many Sovereign user's adjust the tone pot to suit their hearing.

Maybe, I had too much time on my hands last night. I took the XS box off to see signs of mods or corrosion. No signs of wear and everything looked fine this unit had the serial number tag removed and not sure when produced and was glad to see this detector had the shield, which meant a later model.Using the Sovereign site I checked to see if the silent search was modified the jumper not changed, which is good.I adjusted the tone pot higher, did this while everything was apart. My strategy the nickles have such a low tone I don't hear them as well.I'm going out in the field today and see if these tone adjustments will work better for low conductors.HH Ron

At one time i had 3 together, 2 mine and a friends, all were adjusted to the same tone, makes it a lot easier swapping machines when the sound the same.

Ron,

For me I find the way the factory setting are works by far the best for me hearing. I have bought several that someone had set them as high as they can go and found I couldnt tell the seperation of coins and pull tabs as my hearing is bad when it gets to the high pitches. I had to turn them down in order to use them to the factory setting in order to do any good. Now it is great to be able to do this as everyones hearing is differnt, but if a person does this mark where it was set at and if you change the tone and want to sell it be sure you set it back or let the next person know it has been done. The 2 I bought used for differnt people bought them this way and thought it was normal, but couldnt find much but trash and feel they were set so high all the pulltabs and coins all sounded the same while the nickles sounded like pull tabs. They were both bought this way as the previous owner never told them they had the tones changed.
If anyone wants to do this make sure you try all differnt targets to see how they will sound while the cover is off and that you can tell the difference before putting the cover back on, saves you a little time.

I did mark the normal setting. In the field the higher pitch is too much. The pot was marked at normal setting and was returned very close back to the normal setting. My advice don't change the pitch if it hasn't been tampered with, and if any change is made very minimum at a time.HH Ron

Art,I could see where some Sovereign users could benefit from small adjustments. Thanks Ron

I tired it a few years ago and changed it back also. It would be nice if you could increase the range of tones, make it sound even higher pitched without bringing up the lower end but it doesnt work that way:cheers:

Kered, that's a good point, Sovereign users going to another Sovereign unit won't be confused(tone lost). Thanks Ron

It was the reason for adjustment, all 3 sounded different(probably been adjusted by others previously)

By the way.I went back to the clad park for a short hunt after I adjusted it back, still a tad higher than factory. With this adjustment it was much better, but still too high.Another adjustment down that I have only tried on the bench, which only time in the field will tell if this will be my final adjustment..HH Ron

I set mine up at the highest ID (550 /180) with a coin, then adjusted until I had a threshold pitch that my brain really liked. Was about the same tone as a skeeter. Very easy to recognize. Any tone below that is obviously lower to my ears.
I hate skeeters and recognize their sound instantly. Makes the tone I set up very distinctive to me.

If you can hear skeeters pretty good, the sound will get your attention fast. We have heard that same tone millions of times and it is permanently burned into our brains. A sound we have learned to hate can be turned into something useful.Anything halfway between silver and zinc or lower is immediately identified as something lower than silver or clads.....because it just sounds WRONG for a skeeter.
