I used an old White's VLF Surfmaster for years, and had really good luck with it. I now have ordered a Tiger Shark. How many of you use one for fresh water? Would it be a good river machine? Thanks for any input!!
I do. I have nothing but good things to say about it in fresh water!! It is very sensitive to the small stuff with either coil. I hip mount mine so the weight is off my arm, and it is a pleasure to use that way. I don't see why it wouldn't work for you in a river, I have noticed if you use the 10" coil in a current it can get folded up against the shaft if you let the water catch it the right way. You should love it for all your fresh water hunts. HH Joe
In freshwater it rocks! If the Tiger is better it should be great. My SR2 works ok in brackish(have to tune the sens back a hair to be stable) but is noisy in salt.
Like others have said it will find that small gold. I've owned mine for about a year and I do love it, and yes in a fast current the 10.5 coil will flip up. The only other thing that I've noticed is that if the water (waist deep) splashes up against the coil wire going into the box it will make it chatter a little. Thats something that you can work around, change the position or angle of the detector in the water at that moment. HH Scott
Thanks for the posts! I had a coil stabilizer on the old White's unit. Should be easy to make one out of plastic for the Shark. It was a simple "fix'. And yes, fresh water is what I'll be using it in.
