How long is your average beach hunt

I always plan for 2 hours before and 2 hours after low tide. Conditions like my wife's plans for the day, sun, wind, surf, rain/snow and temperature all can cut my time short. The beach's slope and depth can also either cut the time short or in the case of the Cape Cod Bay I can go almost all day due to the flats and shallow areas at high tide. Today I only had time for one fresh water pond - half hour detecting - half hour travel time - only four targets - 3 beer bottle caps (dug just to remove the trash from the beach - and one nickle. Oh yes, one enjoyable hour from 6-7am.

What I used to do all day now takes me all day to do!
My water hunting is currently in local fresh water lakes. I like to go where the boaters swim. drink, party, and lose stuff. I paddle my kayak to those spots, 1/2 hour out, 1/2 hour back. I try to stay on-site for about an hour but really could stay longer if I had to.
My son said to me, "Dad, why don't you get a little fishing boat with a motor so's you don't have to paddle your kayak to those spots?" The truth is, I enjoy the exercise I get from paddling the kayak. Plus, a small motorized boat will involve a trailer, annual registration, annual inspection, motors that won't start, gas cans, oil, trailer hitch, flat tires, launch fees, storage, rust, etc.
Right now, the government doesn't regulate my kayak so it's a freedom issue too.

A lot of things go into how long I might detect at the beach. Temperature, Humidity, Tide, Wind, Wave action etc. Yesterday I was at a fresh water swim area in and out of the water. Detected for about 5 hours. Today was salt water beach. Waves were too rough for comfortable detecting so I detected the sand for 5 hours. Had it not been so hot yesterday and today I most likely would have stayed longer.

Also If I am finding lots of targets I tend to stay longer.

I usually try to hunt the outgoing tide and will generally hunt 5-6 hours. I like to hunt 3 hours before to 3 hours after the low. Again conditions dictate everything.

Between 3 and 5 hours. A lot of beaches around here open at 5:00 A.M., but you don't have to start paying the parking meters until 8:00 A.M., so being cheap, just before 8:00, I leave, making it 3 hours. Other times I can park up on the street for free, so I keep going until 9:00 or 10:00 A.M. depending how soon the people start coming and setting up their blankets and running around in the wet and water.

Has a lot to do with the location, the bay I can go 4 to 5 hours in the water and can walk the half mile back to the truck no problems. At the ocean, in the water or walking the wetsand beach, 3 maybe, 4 hours but I can feel it. 10 years ago I could go 8, just ain't going to happen anymore.

I can go 6 or so if I don't have to work or honey do. I am pinched between gas cost making short hunts seem unwise vs. anatomical age related non-masochistic considerations inhibiting excessively long hunting sessions. Like most everyone else. So I am trying to cut down to 3 to 4 hours say every other hunt, in an effort to remain mobile and married. I prefer 6 hours or better 'cuz I HATE to quit while there are still things to be recovered and I can still move.

I average about 6 hours, but have cut it back to about 5 days a week.... some days we may do 10 hours depending on conditions. Thats straght hunting.... i rarely take a break.
