how is the xterra in sites with iron?

One of the first things I noticed about the X50 when hunting around allot of iron in disc mode is that it will sometimes hit hard on a target (iron or steel) and then a swing or two more across the same target blanks it out 99% of the time. It will give tell, tell signs that the target is junk by not locking first and the target just won't sound like a clean hit.
Crushed aluminum caps will fool it to the point of sounding clean when it hits but the first thing I do is hit the pinpoint button and if it sounds wide or wavering I know it trash.
I've only been fooled by small iron very few times, and much less with the X50 while running in all metal mode because I can hear the iron from different angles and it's a dead give away.
Every good target I've heard on the X50 simply sounds good from the start, never changes, locks on the screen and the pinpoint is nice and tight. No mistaking it once you dig a few.

Hi,

So far, so good. The only real observation I can make so far is that some steel bottlecaps will tend to gieve a mid-range "good" reading and then periodically "chirp" to a high 45. I have to work with this more, but be on the lookout for "good" items that bounce to 45. I believe it will prove to indicate the item is steel.

See the post at http://members5.boardhost.com/MetalDetecting/msg/1138259969.html

Most of us would advise hunting in the "all-metal" mode as many iron items can give a good reading now and then. If you notch out the negative numbers, all you hear are the false high readings and so you think you have an "iffy" good target. But with iron set to accept you find out the item is reading iron most of the time and only giving a false higher reading now and then.

If Monte reads this I hope he will post a copy of his "Quick Out" and "Edge Pass Rejection" methods here

We need a small coil. 6" has been mentioned which will be ok but frankly I was hoping for something even smaller, like a 5".
