How is the ultimate 13 inch coil in iron?

I have a buddy who has been using the 13 inch coil in fields and he swears it works great in iron, he says it preforms even better in heavy iron than stock coil does, what is your experience?

I bought on last fall and used it at an old fairground site. I was very impressed with the coil. For the size, I thought it separated well. I managed to pull out a couple indians and a V nickel. Not much, but considering the beating this site has taken, any coins from this spot are good. I also used it at my seated field and found a 2center and a half dime. Even as small as the half dime is, it rang out hard. Can't remember the depth though. I think it is a nice coil to have in the arsenal. I parted with my WOT after using the Ultimate coil. It does take its toll on my arm. I would suggest a harness if you want to use it for extended periods. Good luck.

G4E--- I have a 15" WOT on the way...I've heard good things about it and the Ultimate. I'll let you know how it feels when swinging...I'm not sure I will notice any difference. Hopefully it gets a little better seperation and/or a little more depth. Who knows...it is worth a try.

I have alot of hours on that coil. Its just slightly heavier than the stock but very minimal. It does seem huge compared to the stock coil. I think its a great coil but not ideal for trashy areas. But then that's why you have the. 8 x 6 coil.

Got these in the Iron today!....Love the Ultimate!

Yeah I don't get it, makes perfect sense to me to USE the 6x8 in a high iron area but my buddy swears by this 13" coil in high iron fields, and I see his finds, he is pulling stuff like crazy, looks to me like it should be in constant null using that coil. He has more experience on his etrac, always finds more than me each season.....so I tend to not ignore what he says. But this time I am baffled. lol

The etrac does null with the ultimate coil however for some reason the good targets still sound out thru the null. Ive tries TT and multi with this coil and no matter the good targets still come thru. And yes only 2+ oz difference. But it glides across the ground nice

Not so much the weight as it is the size. Too me it feels like swinging a trash can lid. Like swining a WOT. I think it is more a balance thing. It is easier to swing than a WOT, but I think after 4-5 hours, it wears me out. A harness would help. I did use a Docs swingy thing. I really don't like it. I seem to fight the bungy. That could be what takes its toll on me. May have to get a Minelab harness and try that.

2.3 oz difference is all? i cant imagine even being able to tell a difference

Hey G4E, I've been using the Ultimate ever since it came out. I very, very rarely even take it off of my etrac. I use it predominantly for field hunting and I have found it to separate very well in iron. It takes a little getting used to at first but I have the 10x12 SEF, the stock coil, 6x8 SEF, and the little sunray......they all collect a lot of dust I'm afraid. Swinging the Ultimate is a bit hard on the arm/shoulder at first but once you get used to it, it's not a problem. If you're considering it as a purchase, I would recommend it. I really don't think you would regret it. You do a lot of the same type of hunting that I do (only your sites seem to be a bit more productive than mine usually are....lol). I've had no problem finding even small bits and pieces of conductive metal in fairly heavy iron/nail patches out in the field. With the ultimate, the etrac matches up pretty well with my CTX too. It goes about as deep as any of my sites have targets worth digging and I've found good stuff in places I'd already hit pretty hard with the etrac and other coils.
Good luck and Happy Hunting.

I have the NEL Tornado equivalent.
Same round size as the Ultimate. It would seem those two larger coils would have separation problems but its not really the case unless the area is super hyper trashy but even then i've successfully isolated many keepers in those conditions by the wiggle method. At some point it does defy conventional logic.

Only thing i can think of, those two larger coils are designed to give a much narrower transmit energy foot print possibly the reason for the great separation. That might also account for more accurate IDs at greater depths.
Can't speak for the Ultimate but the NEL coil also detects deeper than the Pro coil albeit a little more chatty all things being equal.

G4E - I got out a little bit last weekend on some open area ball fields with the ultimate 13 as the ground in the parks was still too hard around here.
The coil has impressed me enough to want to keep using it in larger areas e.g. ball fields going forward.
I noticed a couple silver dimes that were very close to iron that I pulled @ 8 inches deep. The field I was in was somewhat junky and it was very stable.
The coil isn't too much heavier than the stock coil but the added size tires my arm out a little quicker than the stock. I use the swingy thingy and can go for hours with that coil.
To me it is very similar to the stock pro-coil only a little larger so it will hit a little harder on silver and has slightly more depth.
I'm definitely not ready to leave it on all the time in parks but it will definitely be my coil of choice for larger area detecting.
