How important is using a coil cover???

Just got word my AT Pro is shipping tommorrow, but the distributor is out of coil covers. How important is it to use a coil cover and are there any alternatives? im new to MDing, couldn't you tell

:usaflag:Yeah, if you are just sweeping in the grass you really don't need one. Some guys on here don't use any at all...it's a matter of preference really. If you start getting into sand and rocks, a cover will definately extend the life of the coil. Or at the very least will keep your coil scratch-free.

Appreciate the information, can't wait to get out with it, know of some really old homesteads that have not been MD'd

I just started last spring and I use the Ace250 with the stock coil and the sniper. I've never used the dust cover and have no intentions of getting one. The bottom of the stock coil is a little scratched but I cant imagine that it will effect the performance. I try to be careful with it, but you can't completely avoid "tapping it gently" on fence posts, rocks, tree trunks, etc. Still works fine. Personally, I think that it's one more thing that they would like to sell to all of us

when i got my ace 250, the dealer said the most important thing that goes with it is the coil cover. I asked him if getting a scratch on the coil affects it's preformance, he said no. he said it will just make it ugly and it will sell for less. I would plan on using it in a grassy area and figuring out if you are going to keep the detector for a long time. if you are, dont buy the cover. if you plan on getting a better detector in a year or so, get the cover.
