How I increased depth capabilities of my XS by as much as 1-1/2 inches...

Very preliminary results and I emphasize Very preliminary. Last night I was out for a few hours on a real clean and picked over site and I decided to "mess around" with my normal detecting style and settings. After trying some stuff I didnt like, I set my sens down from 31 to 29 even though it was stable at 31. then I started waving a dime over the coil and raising it up untill it was just barely there (probably 8-10 inches away). on the last pass I went real slow and it didnt pick it up. I began waving it again but this time much slower, now I was loosing it at around 7-8 inches. Then it hit me, My sweep speed is even slower than that! It was realy eye opening! I could wave the dime slowly untill I lost it, then speed up and it came back every time, sometimes as much as an inch or two higher. There seems to be an optimum speed, and once you go to fast it starts to loose it again. So I pocketed the dime and started whipping that sucker like I used to do with my old detector. Not ten swings later I got a good semi deep signal which I would just about loose when I slowed down. Low and behold, at around seven inches was a '43 merc! four feet further, another similar target: that one was a '40 merc just a hair over seven inches deep.
At this point, I was realy siked, so I packed up and headed down the road to a much older site. At this spot I had less inspiring results I did manage a couple wheaties and a no date standing liberty quarter at usual depths, but this entire place was loaded with coal cinders and clinkers. I Had to set the sens down to 20 to get a stable threshold. All the ferrous junk seemed to destroy that nice coil whipping effect. Well, I guess I will try it again somewhere else.
Has anyone else ever noticed this effect? any and all input would be great! HH

I have a friend that detects like his pants are on fire. I swear he can cover an acre of ground in a hour or so, that is how fast he works his detector. I won't mention any names but Rick(ND) knows who it is and chances are, he will end up reading this. I took him to a place that me and another detectorist had been to the previous day and within 2 hours he had 8 silver coins and 2 of them were Barber,1 Quarter and the other a dime. I still can't figure out how a person can go so fast with the Explorer and have that kind of results. So yes, I have witnessed this first hand and can't explain it. Hope you find some more coins doing it that way and keep the posts coming.

I also have see this person in action and i agree with James 100%. It looks like he is using a old style weed wacker.

Todd,

I'm assuming you must be running Auto sens if you are running 29 or 31. Generally you can move a coin across the coil so slowly that the detector doesn't see it at all. This effect is more pronounced in Auto than Manual. Move it quick and you get a response.

The problem is that most of the areas we hunt are so trashy that when you move fast the explorer doesn't have time to react to all the signals, thus the common wisdom is to go slow.

I think anytime you do something different: coil size, angle of attack, sweep speed, settings you will get signals that you wouldn't otherwise. Which combination works best overall at most sites is the big question.

He just has to have a good ear to hear the tone changing going this fast and I know he misses a lot of good coins too. I know of another person this way too with his Sovereign and i know he missed many deep one, but think he was going more for the quanity. He now has a Explorer and he can go fast with it too.

He has been on here and has seen what everyone has been posting and he called me up and the first thing he started saying to me was a repeat of what I posted and I just broke out laughing at him. But he is one of the best Explorer user's in the area and you can't take that away from him. Isn't that right buddy! I think this thread is starting to get a little bit too deep if you know what I mean.

Your just a fun guy to tease James because we know you can take it. James has helped me with settings on my machine and he knows how to use it. I have a couple other thing i want James to help me with when we start hunting this spring. It nice to know great guys like James and Rick to help when you have questions about your explorer.

Now we will have to show him what he is missing.
This is what makes it fun is all the kidding around with our good friends we hunt with.
