This is how I approach a iffy signal .
I have 2 pattern's set up in ferrous coin combine one open with fe line at 26 and the other fe line at 26 and 31 to 35 disc out .All the other bins set at my normal hunting modes bin 1 at 200 hz 1 to 10 bin 2 at 1000 hz 11 to 15 bin 3 at 400 hz 16 to 28 and bin 4 at 1000 hz 29 to 50 . Sizing and normal for sound both target traces enabled .
When I find a signal say a nail 2 hit's one way one hit the other first pass east west I get the 2 hit's iron I say but this is a important step before turning 90 degrees to said target get the depth of the nail now turn 90 degrees and get the depth of the said target are they the same .
If they are the same this tells me it's not a nail or long object but if I get 4 one way and 6 or 7 the other way it's a nail or long item .Your north south hit will always be deeper than your east west hit on a nail or long object okay.
The reason you want the depth both ways is to tell you if there is something with that nail , Now a coin with that nail will read 4 inches east west and 5 inches north south much more stable reading as compared to just the nail by itself .
The coin will make the depth reading closer together and make it more stable .
So you got a grunt and high tone mixed in with it try and separate the high tone from the grunt if not and there just together go to the second pattern if the grunt goe's away and you get the high tone dig
Now if the grunt is still there after going to pattern 2 go to target trace and see if you can build a target or not if not then you have to determine if the target is in the same place as the good tone you received if a coin is with a nail it well be pulled where the nail is so don't assume that it's just a nail .
After trying all this and you can't make heads or tails of said target go by depth if it's reading 4 one way 5 the other or 6 one way 7 the other then there's a good chance of a good target with nail
Now bent nails C V X L or others are going to read depth wise the same almost like the coin nail depth. Go to pattern 2 and see if you can disc it out if not dig it save some time your going to get some of these anyway and just quicker to just dig .
Other iron objects that are round or square are going to be close in depth both ways also so use pattern 2 on these as well to see if you can get rid of them instead of digging
There's other things you can do but use that( DEPTH GAUGE) it well give you more imfo before you dig also you well not be digging those 9 and 10 inch nails as much If anybody can ad to this few welcome sube
