How good is the V3i for finding gold nuggets?

???? Exactly how big are your nuggets???????????????? SORRY I just had to say that.. In my experience the v is very good for prospecting nuggets but for finding black sand and gold lines and areas the gold specific machines are better. It is my understanding that they work on a lower freq. Others here are more knowable and will fill you in Good luck and I hope they are HUGE Bill

Here is one thread of many covering that topic http://www.findmall.com/read.php?66,1705332,1709631#msg-1709631

Search the V forum for gold nuggets, all dates and you will get many answers to your question.

Hi,

I would not recommend a person buy the V3i as a nugget detector as it has way more features and a higher cost that you need just for nugget detecting. The MXT would be a better choice. But if you already own one, it can indeed find gold nuggets. I have seen it used two years in a row at Ganes Creek, Alaska with very good results by a veteran nugget hunter. http://whiteselectronics.com/component/story/title/gainesgold.html

Yep, Steve, it makes sense that there are other detectors, like the MXT, that have more bang for the buck as nugget detectors. But if someone has a V3i, *and* let's say an MXT or a Gold Bug Pro, and he can choose any of them, or for someone where cost is no object, how does the V3i stack up in terms of sheer nugget finding capability? The V3i has a slightly higher frequency than either, supposedly has a state of the art ground balancing system, and has better depth/higher power (witness the much higher battery drain on the V3i), so wouldn't the V3i do a little better than pretty much any VLF detector except for maybe a GMT or GB2 or other dedicated gold detector? Agree though that if natural gold is all you're after, there are better machines for the money than the V3i.

I have to admit that I have not attempted down and dirty nugget detecting with the V3i in highly mineralized ground versus various other detectors so I can't answer the question directly from personal experience. If the V3i had glaringly obvious better performance as a nugget detector in the field prospectors would be migrating to it in droves and the fact they are not is telling. I have one and have to admit to not being inclined towards beating up a $1500 detector when one costing half as much will do the trick. Practicality does matter.

I've used the V3i for nugget hunting and it does a decent job. Thing is though that with your time being the real commodity out there....no substitute for a dedicated gold machine on a "real" gold hunt. Gaines Creek has some real lunkers but still most are small and the higher frequency does that like nothing else. That guy who does well sure illustrates how important it is to know your machine to bring out it's full potential. (Hats off to him.) Good to see you show up here Steve! Scott

If you know what your doing a V3I with a 4x6 is just as good as anything else in the field

Well........... nothing is better than a dedicated gold detector but the V3i does a good job on pickers on up.

Interesting topic, but can I set up a gold program with my V3 and dedicate 22.5 khz. just for gold nuggets using different size coils that is? I also agree with Wayfarer on his/her opinion.

Yes, or you can just choose the Prospector program and it has already been done for you.
