Looking for an under water detector that will not cost a fortune. what kinds are out there and is the neptune a good starter one? I am a newbie at underwater.

The short answer is no. The long answer is I've not used a neptune nor would I own one. I have 8 plus years working in the water. I haven't done any metal detecting for many years now. I would buy one of the more expensive machines. First where are you going to detect, fresh water or ocean water? The machines that work in salt water work in fresh water. But some of the salt water machines pick up very small bits of iron. This can quickly become a pain in the back, this more true in fresh water. The machines aimed at the fresh water hunter don't perform well at a salt water beach. The best answer are here in the past threads. You will be much happier if you wait on buying a cheap machine and maybe buy a used one from one of the forums. This way you will save money and if you don't like water hunting you can resell a used machine and re-coop most of your money. Best to you and you are welcome to pm me, Mike.

You are welcome. There are lots of experienced hunters here. Few or none of these hunters use a Neptune. Just keep reading and maybe ask "I want to hunt at a (fresh water or ocean) beach and want to spend $X.00. What would you recommend?" This kind of question will get the best response. Like I said before keep reading and you will learn and end up spending less and getting far more for your money. Oh yea if you like to find gold and money get wet. Mike

I am just wanting to try out somethingdifferent. I will mainly be in fresh water not going too deep to start.

Spend more and get something really worth it. There are lots of used machines available on this and other forums and ebay, craig's list. That's where I would go looking. Also go to all the major manufactures and see what they are selling now and go look the same units at used prices. I really have to say used machine, if it is in good working condition is the way to go. If you buy a used machine and don't like it you can resell it an get most of your money back. Best to you, Mike.
