How good is the MXT?

In the Park?
Prospecting?
Relics?

Would like to know how you MXT users like this machine.

Thanks

Try it; you'll like it. It's the best machine I've owned in 35 years of detecting, and I always have bought the best machines available in Garrett and White's machines.

Over the years I've used D-Tex, Bounty Hunter, White's (two machines), Discovery and Minelab (Quattro), but I always seem to go back to my trusty MXT! I have never found a better, more versatile machine, and the more I use it the better it seems to work.

It's easy to learn, has everything I need in a machine. I use Relic Mode almost exclusively, sometimes Prospecting Mode for all-metal applications. It isn't as deep as the Quattro, but it's like an extension of my arm now, and as a result I always seem to find more with it.

It grows on you. Stick with it and it will serve you well!!!

Well its a user friendly unit that provides good depth and ID and is sort of 3 machines in one for those that use it for multiple tasks.Lightweight and ergonomically superior to many its easy on the arm and pocketbook compared to many high priced units. Adding a more superior notch and tone ID would make it even better...Whites are you listening...

It's dam good. I'd put it up against any other machine. It's nearly spot on for coin identification. The discrimination is pretty good: it can tell the difference between most pull tabs and nickels, and you will be able to ID most coins before you dig em. As far as sensesivity, I've found minnie balls at 10" pretty routinely.
I dont prospect so I have no comment there.
This is the go-to machine from which all others can be compared.
Go get one - you will be happy.

I've got an MXT and son has a Minelab XTerra-50. After using the MXT, I personally can't stand the slow response on his Minelab. The MXT just seems to be a heck of a lot "snappier" and the audio clues it provides really helps me ID targets. I just don't get that from the XTerra.

Also, the coil selection is HUGE for the MXT...

Note: I've only been detecting seriously for about 20 months, so limited experience with what else is available out there. I do hunt every day for several hours when the season permits. Approx 1000hrs put in. Much more experience on the MXT than the XTerra. So take this for what it's worth.

ordered one yesterday with a 4 by 6 DD. Chose it over the 5.3 to use in the park and along the banks of our local river. Did I make the right choice or should I have gone for the 5.3, reason I ask is I have 150 whites shopper bucks could still get the 5.3 or the 6 by 10 DD.
I hunt old homesteads, ghost towns and parks wanting to give prospecting a try.
Thanks for the feedback on my first question and thanks in advance for your thoughts on coils.

I feel you made the right choice as the MXT is a great detector and my favorite of the Whites. I also have the 4X6 coil and the 6X10 and some say the 5.3 is better, but for me that little 4X6 does a great job of separating plus some great depth, in fact I have never seen a small coil with this kind of depth.
Good luck with your MXT and may it do as well for you as my MXT does for me.

Rick

I hate it. The MXT is so noisy and erratic its unusable.
I just bought a Prizm to replace it. Took the prizm out today and it was much better all around.

With the standard round coil, the 4X6 and the 6X10 you will be able to get good performance from your MXT no matter what type of ground you are hunting. Great park and relic hunter and I've read many posts about it being a good gold prospector also. Have Fun, ArtWI

Marc,

Your thoughts on the Quattro? I just bought one to hunt really bad ground. So far, both my Nautilus and MXT go deeper in good ground. I can't reach a mini at 10" in good ground like I can with my other two machines.

Thanks I'm taking your advice on the 6 by 10. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

If you have a Nautilus and are looking for Mini's, can I assume you are back east somewhere? I'm in Arizona, and I'm sure the soil conditions are entirely different. Frankly, I haven't had the Quattro long enough to really know what I'm doing yet. I do find it's consistently deeper than my MXT, but I use a little 5" coil most of the time so I guess that's an unfair comparison.

The more I use the Quattro, the more I like it. The depth readout is right-on for coin sized items, and the notching ability is fantastic. I THINK I'm even getting the hang of "cross saving".

Here are MY feelings of advantages for each:

MXT:
Pinpoints like a dream
Three tones, not a symphony
Ferrous (Iron Content) readout
Confidence Bars
Wider range of ID numbers
Recovery speed

Quattro:
Depth (for me, anyways)
Accurate depth readings
Custom notching
Steady threshold with definite nulls

I bought the Quattro purely on the strength of depth claims and for the ability to customize notching. Again, I haven't used it enough to make an honest comparison, but if I HAD to choose one machine only I'd go with the MXT.
