How good is the CXlll for coin hunting ???

BJ in Okla.

Active member
I would like to know how good the CXlll is for hunting old coins mixed in with clad and trash, rusty nails and tabs, this area is old but still in use. The CX will have the 8 1/2" and the 4 1/2".. The soil is mild and no grass, and the dirt has been moved around.
Any tips would help...
Thanks & HH.

Under those conditions you will need the sniper coil. All the CX detectors are good, but are hard to swing. They are just too clunky for my tastes.

I still use the CXIII as my primary hunting machine. I almost sold it on eBay when I got my ACE 250, but after using the ACE for about a week, I decided to keep both. I use the CXIII with and without the sniper coil. Even with the standard 8.5" coil I am able to pick out coins even when they are right next to trash targets. IN pinpoint mode I always know for sure whether or not it is a coin beneath.

Does this unit have the "Power Master" circuitry? If it does then you can expect 20% more depth than the models made in the early '90s. Mine does not, and it is the only draw back. I compensate for this by using the 12.5 Deep Seeking "Pizza" Coil.

Yes it has the Power Master...And a 4.5 coil....
I used a 1500 for about a year...The pin point was right on the spot.
Thanks & HH..

Spoiled? Me? Alright youre right, I am. The Tesoros and the GT series Garretts have done it to me.

But the CX series are all you would need for the vast majority of land hunting. A few of my best finds were made with one. There is a side benefit to them, too - you soon develop the grip of Titan after swinging them for awhile.

I find that, although the CXIII is twice as heavy as the ACE250, the weight is more balanced than the ACE. I find it is just as stressful on the arm swinging the ACE.

Yeah they put you in shape for arm wrestling. I used Tesoros for many years. Wish I still had my little Compadre. Many moons ago Jack made private label detectors and he made one for Kellyco and I bought one not knowing it was a Tesoro. Soon as I got it ( although it was blue in color ) I could tell it was a Tesoro Silver Sabre, so I called Jack and asked him and he confirmed it. One of the best little beepers I ever owned. I owned and used all the Sabre models.

I used to belong to Tesoro's writers club and got all my detectors at distributors price - 48% off. Then one of the boys pi$$ed me off over a detector I ordered and I pretty much quit using Tesoros. Guess that's more than you wanted to know.

Not me, Bill - I like to know all sorts of "stuff."

I know this is a Garrett forum so I wont belabor this point, but the Tesoros are indeed great little beepers. They aren't feature laden like the Garretts, so you develop different methods. But one of the best things that ever happened to detectors was the uMax format.

As for the CX series models, I thought the balance would be good at first, especially since the arm cuff was broken on the one I had and I had little choice but to let it swing. At first it was weird but tolerable. Yet the more I used it, the more I got to not liking it. That's just me and is essentially an ergonomic issue - ergonomics vary from person to person.

I confess to being surprised that the swing mechanics have been retained on the CX's (essentially the same balance and moment arms as those from the early days), and I am at a loss to explain why. Possbily as a way to distinguish the line from others in the Garrett catalog. Nevertheless, the detectors function is pure Garrett... loud and clear on good targets. If you have one, or can get one, use it. They work well.
