how does the gain setting effect the signal return of rusty nails,,,,,

grouser

New member
i been reading and am getting the impression that a high gain setting , especially in wet ground, can make rusty nails sound way to good so some guys. I am confused because I thought the gain only increased the VOLUME of weak deep signals and had nothing to do with the way those signals were processed. If the gain is to high and changes the sound of a rusty nail then it seems to me it does MORE than just increase volume,,,,

I can't answer the question on how or why, but I know when I have gain at 30 it does false more on deep nails. I back it off to 29 and I no longer have that problem

Reduce your gain, I run mine at 24, and turn deep on. It will do the same thing as gain on 29 or 30 but will reduce the amount of falsing by a lot.

there are a few things about our machines we may never fully understand but they are what they are,,, thanks gents

Had the same problem yesterday, was using max GAIN 30 like always, but sensitivity was unusual- max 30,possibly this helped rusty iron to jump on the screen top more than usual. I think iron jump to the top screen is Etrac programing problem, but not gain, high sensitivities just ads pain. Will try what treasure sstate write: lower sensitivity and switch too Deep.
I was using open screen Tones 1. Later will try older explorer 1050 coil maybe this will soften a bit problem?. with explorer never had this jumping Iron problem. Positive about Etrac- screen is very accurate even with deep small targets.

"I was using open screen Tones 1"
,...... that is why,,,, your gonna hear everything in that mode,,, same darn tone for gold or iron,,, pluss sens to high IMHO

grouser Yes all targets sounds the same, but screen showings is different or the same like in all other settings, rusty iron all the time jumpy to top screen, in TTF and conduct is the same.
Tone 1 on etrac and explorer is real all metal, detector works much more stable than in TTF and discrimination, this helps to use max sensitivity to achieve max depth in some specific situation. Just batteries should be fresh, I noticed when I started detecting etrac was more stable than after few hours my detecting, or maybe I was more tired to listen cacophony?

You got me wanting to try it now,,,,hahahahah sounds like another tool in the box for et users,,,, thanks !!!

alright thanks,,,,, !!!!
