How do you use the SovGT in a trashy park...

or even a moderately trashy old park with lots of iron. Every place that has lots of iron and canslaw.. I have a problem, I end up digging a bunch of trash.

What is your method for finding hidden or deep goodies without digging up the whole place?

The SovGT was my first detector and it will always hold a special place... but I can use the E-TRAC and pick good stuff out of "hunted out" parks while the SovGT will have me digging all sorts of trash. What am I missing? I know some, like RickND, seem to be able to use it in a trashy park and do well... I usually hunt in disc, with the disc and notch all the way down and mostly in AUTO because it is unstable in most places I hunt with the sens above 2:00... I seem to get decent depth in AUTO. I buried a quarter at about 7" and the GT will ID it as well as the ET and better than the SE. batter than the T2 too, so I don't think AUTO is an issue, in fact the ground is so hard and rocky around here that most targets are 6" or less. I sometimes find CW buttons on top of the ground.

I want to use the Gt more but every time I do... Iend up digging a lot of trash that sounds and reads good on the meter.

Thanks in advance.

Well jbow this is how I handle a sov in a trashy area.First get to know your tones.Swing very slow, when she nulls out stop the swing and wait till the threshold comes back and then resume again. While swinging pay close attention to the tones, keep your ears tuned in.With a good pair of phone you can and will hear the high pitch of copper or silver. As an example lets say you have a junk target a good target and a junk target under your coil.It will sound of as junk, good, junk target. The good tone will be a short spike, this is where a meter comes in handy. When you hear that short spike swing again slowly over these targets and keep an eye on your meter.Walk around the targets while swinging your coil very slowly.Using the S5 coil is a bonus also.Hope this helps. This has helped me,Iam sure others will chime in and give you lots of good hints.

Been trying to get time to PM Julian, but what you say is about what i do too. Going very slow is the main thing and knowing your Sovereign well and all the tones it give out. The meter to me also is important for me too as to just to see what those numbers are doing while listening to those tones.

My biggest problem is with small bits of aluminum. They sound good to me and they usually read good too, many read 180 like a quarter. I can tell a whole can by raising the coil.

Also I have a really hard time with cut or broken square nails. If they are whole they will double beep but if they are 1" long they sound and read like a good target.

Those are my main problems.

Thanks for thee help...

Julien the Sov is tough to work in trash areas, I prefer the Etrac for such places or one of my other faster resetting machines. Like Marc says you have to stop swinging it alot when it nulls, allow it to reset and crawl along slowly.
I suspect part of the problem is your ground itself, if your getting small bits of aluminum reading at 180 which is a quarter or dime reading, then something is causing your GT to read incorrectly. Or its so trashy that your constantly reading multiple targets in which case I would have to ask does it perform this way with even a 5" coil?
If your finding civil war buttons on top of the ground I would try hunting that area with a Tesoro or Shadow with the sens turned down and let their excellent discriminators work for you along with their fast resets. Sounds like there is tons of stuff just below the surface there.

I already did that... with a Tejon... theres not much CW stuff left at that site. I have an 8" coinstrike. I'm going back to that site over the weekend and i'll try it and let you know exactly what I am getting and what the readings are. I have to run either auto or 3:00 on the sens to get any stability at all.

I run the Sens at only 30% with the SunRay S-12 coil and was getting coins at 20 + inch's at the beach last weekend........ backing off on the Sens on the GT will not cause lost of depth...... Believe me I hit 3 Dime's we over 20 + inch's ..........It was like I was digging Fox holes to get my Targets .......... I only used the GT in a trashy park once, and ran back to the car and got the small 8 inch coil........... and sweep very very very slow and be patience......... as the Gt 's Recovery speed is not all that fast.
