How do you tell old black powder ammo from newer ones?

Allen in Texas

I found these 2 lead balls. Each has a dimple to keep it from rolling around. They are 7/16" in dia.and weigh 1/2 oz.They had no white patina when found.

Thanks,

i don t think it s good idea to go cutting up your finds til you know what they are.most of the musket balls i ve seen are rather crude as they were hand made with lots of dimples. civil war military ammo introduced the sabot which is actually a bullet not a round ball.either way i never saw lead that color either

Allen Did you find those lead balls near Pine trees. Here in Australia I have dug similar lead balls from Pine plantations and they were brown in colour, a result of being in close prox to the Pines.
