Some items can be given an age just by their size, like railroad spikes for example. Others not so much. Even depth of an item found can be somewhat misleading. I have found wheat pennies at less than 2 inches and modern/clad coins deeper than 6 inches. I would research any and all Internet possibilities, perhaps a local library if available, to research the area in which the item was found. Hope this helps.

Good luck and HH

Jeff
