How Do You Take Macro Pics On Brilliant objects???

when I take pics of silver coins or objects the flash frequently distorts the quality of image. Of course I'm 3-5" away from object and flash cannot be turned off on a Canon PowerShot A300.
Any tricks that will get around this problem?
Thanks!
here are some examples!
2nd 1942 from left is where I assume flash is on camera. and far right coin goes darker.???

cutout a piece of tracing paper the size of the flash tube and place it over the flash.
You need to cutdown the light a bit
