How do you post a picture???

I am sure this topic has been covered 1,000,000 times but I can't figure it out. I go to upload file... pick a picture and then hit open. I get a message that says No file can larger than 420 KB??? l also haven't been able to place my avatar... DUH!

I have an AT Pro and AT Gold and have found a bunch of cool finds. I would like to post them so you guys can oohh and ahhh! I am a baby boomer so use simple language and small words.
