How do you know when summer is on it's way

For those who metal detect even in the worst of weather it is always nice to be able to enjoy the peaceful hunt of not hearing "hey what is that thing?" from some kid or some adult saying " I always wanted one of those". Then comes the 20 questions game and the never-ending shadow or shadows of kids following you on your hunt. Today was one of those days. It was nice enough at the park that I had two different curious kids ask me ?'s and follow me around, one kid for almost the whole hunt. At first I was a little annoyed by him asking ?'s and following me around because I only had just over an hour to hunt before work. Then it became fun to explain to him how everything worked. It just happened that I found a ring on one of my digs while he was with me. He told me that when he grew up he wanted to get a metal detector. It was later that I remembered when I was a kid some guy metal detecting in the park and how fascinated I was by what he was doing. I later realized to, these guys may be the future of this great hobby. It was fun to spend my short hunt with this kid. I hope my kids that are too young to hunt along side me will have as much of an interest in the hobby when they get older. Summer is coming soon and along with it come the ?'s. We as detectorists may make someone's day by being friendly and our day in turn. It never hurts to spread goodwill for the hobby.

Many times I'll take my dogs along with me. And if someone ask questions from a little distance, you can't hear them with headphones on. Or at least pretend. That's how it usually goes when time is short - otherwise I have got a few kids do the rooting around in the tot lots. Hit a target, pinpoint, them them have a dig - but let them use a raker or something so they don't get cut by shard by accident. Fun to watch their expressions. I even let a few swing the detector, work the propointer, dig & keep. Fun. I get a break and enjoy watching.
