How do you clean your coins?

Reggie

New member
I'm not doing so well cleaning the coppers, zincs or clads. So how do you clean your without removing the metal? The soil in Louisiana eats zinc like I eat Pizza, and the clads turn very dark. Thanks!

Got mine from Harbor Freight on their web site. I believe they're under $30. Fill drum one-half to three-quarters full of aquarium gravel (walmart). Add dirty coins, enough water to cover gravel and coins, a squirt of dish washing soap. Tumble for 10-60 minutes. Gets them pretty clean but not shinny. Still dark but good enough to spend or roll. This method shouldn't be used with coins that are key date or more rare.

I bought a Nic-A-Lene kit from these guys:

Does a very good job, especially on silver. You have to be careful on corroded copper. Many times when you take the corrosion away, part of the detail is missing on Indian heads and wheats. Does fine on clad, but I usually tumble the clad.
