HOW DO YOU CLEAN SAND ENCRUSTED COINS?

I use a tumbler with aquarium gravel for the nickles dimes and quarters. fill it a third full of rocks, add about the same amount of coins, 1-2 drops of dishwashing soap, and fill with enough water to cover it all. Tumble if for 30 miniutes, and they come out mostly clean. Some need more, so I pull out the clean ones, and add more, elaving the dirty ones for another cycle. Crusty pennies I do not clean, they are permanetly damaged. I plan to bag them soemday and deposit them in a lump. Bank will love me that day!

I wash the silver and copper pennies off with fresh water and dump them into my bank's coin machine and it pays me. The encrusted clad pennies get hit with a ballpene hammer. I then scrape off any excessive sand on the side walk, roll 'em and deposit 'em. I even get paid for holed ones too. Who am I to say what is acceptable? I let the mint decide and I get paid!

I discovered last week that Palmolive dish soap... bright green color.... worked wonders on my coins! The pennies were so bright I couldn't believe it! No ammonia or vinegar required, only gravel, water, coins, and about 1 tsp soap.

I roll them up and get paid for pitted and partially ragged coins
