How do you clean matchbox cars

What cleaning method do you use on matchbox type cars that are full of mud and dirt?
 
The few that I have cleaned, I soaked in water for a couple of days, and then just sprayed them off (and out) with a water hose. A little dish soap and a toothbrush will clean the residue up fairly well.
