How Do You Carry Your Digger, Probe, & Pinpointer?

I posted this about a year ago but thought it'd be a fun discussion again to share ideas...

I thought it would be interesting to see how others are carrying their tools in the field. My digger, probe, pin pointer, and ID chart were thrown into various pockets on this holster. I found it for $6 at Home Depot. While I was at it I figured I'd get rid of the hooky looking leather belt I was using and buy a real utility belt for $3 there as well. This setup rests nicely on my left hip out of the way

This holder has a nice big pocket for my digger, another screwdriver holder for my probe, and an elastic pocket that snugly holds my Garrett Pro Pointer without the need to use the holster it came with. The picture doesn't look like it but the pin pointer's pocket is very snug, yet it still allows easy removal and re-insertion of the probe without needing two hands. Same deal with the other tools. I try to make things so I can use just my left hand to remove and use the various items. There's even a big pocket behind the digger pocket that I keep my Sovereign ID chart in should I need to reference it to refresh my memory on something. It doesn't show up well in the picture but you can see something white behind the digger's pocket. While I was at it I also threw an extra nylon bolt/wing nut into the extra pocket should I need that to fix a coil mount bolt in the field. Come to think of it I should probably stick a few extra rubber washers in there as well in case I lose one swapping coils.

This holster is the type that doesn't need a belt. You can stick that part into your pocket if you don't like wearing those. Since the picture I later cut off the dog chain connector and the unneeded cover that folds over the pin pointer's pocket, and I also later cut a hole in the bottom of the pockets for the Pro Pointer and the probe so that they both sit more down into the pockets and stick out the bottom. Works great and I couldn't be happier with this setup.

I'm still using the old two pocket style apron from Home Depot for my finds to go in one pocket and my trash in the other. I prefer using those because it's easy to shake out the dirt, remove the junk, and wash it once in a while should need be. Can't tell you how many years I carried my digger by sticking it in my apron's trash pocket. It would poke me in the belly when bending down, fall out on me without me realizing it, migrate dirt or mud to my shirt or deposit it into the apron, and even my trash would stick to it when I remove the digger sometimes when it was wet out.

The biggest thing for me was making sure none of the pockets would snag or cause me to have to use two hands for removing or replacing a tool. That leads to frustration in the field. I feel it makes no sense to tweak out your machine but not do the same with your tools so everything goes as smooth as possible in the field.

I'd love to see pictures of what others find to be a useful setup for them in the field.

As light and comfortable as possible ,in fields and woods i use the Predator Raven 25 not pictured i have a alum.J hook on my military pistol belt in the rear to carry it ,search probe on the rod , i keep a Lesche on my belt works just fine, Jim

Nice setup. What is that box on your shaft? Is that a Sunray inline probe? Thought they were bigger than that. Can't be a meter as I see you've got the internal one on the control box.

Yes thanks
that is the S-1 probe you can not see it in the photo it,s under the rod behind the box, i put a small peice of PVC pipe around the probe switch to keep it from getting hit , here is a side view. Jim

Hey Critter. I keep it simple. Finds/garbage pouch, digger and pin-pointer. HH. Matt

Hey Matt, in the picture next to your old (white) version of the S-5 coil, the other coil looks like an 8x6? That can't be on a Sovereign since they don't make one for it. What machine is that? I like the looks of that coil.

Critter. I soooo wish I had a 6x8 for my Sovereign GT. My other machine is a DFX and that is the SEF 6x8. Im big into little coils. HH. Matt

Yea, it's a cool looking little coil. I've read of Etrac or Explorer guys getting like 10" of depth on a dime with that coil....which is just outstanding. I'm sure that's in some rather good low mineral soil, though. Then again, I've read of Sovereign owners getting 10" on a dime (think I've read 12 or 14" on a quarter) using an 8" coil...Which is also pretty outstanding too. Again, I'm sure that was in some good soil.

Around my parts most of my sites tend to be mineralized. I wouldn't say super mineralized, but in no way not that neutral good black topsoil that doesn't seem to bother detectors. Just about all the detectors I ever owned couldn't break the 7.5" depth barrier around here. Now it's nothing for me to pull coins deeper than that with my GT. I was simply stunned when I dug a v-nickle in one hole at about 11" and a indian about that deep in another. I was convinced it was going to be a large piece of trash the signal was so good, yet I had already dug much deeper than I thought was possible for a coin. Wheats and mercs at 8 or 9" are nothing to get excited about now, but it sure blew my mind when I first started popping those at those depths.

I CARRY MINE IN A FIVE GALON BUCKET .

Ism, that's probably the best digger on the market. My friend has one and it does a easier job of digging deep plugs than my digger. Not sure what mine is called, but it has a black handle and is probably almost as popular as the one you are using. Every spring I sharpen the edge on it to make cutting clean plugs a little more easier.

I should do that but I always forget before going out and after getting home. I did sharpen it once last year I think and it certainly does cut nicer plugs when sharpened.
I think I'll go to the garage and sharpen it after I get done posting.....if I don't forget...grin

Don't know if I said it but that picture I posted was when I first got this tool belt. I have since cut a hole in the bottom of the pocket the Pro Pointer goes into so it sits down further in the pocket and cut off the flap that it had for that pocket. The material for this pocket is somewhat elastic so it really holds the Pro Pointer snugly. Also poked a hole in the screwdriver holder pocket for my metal probe so it sits down in that pocket too, and cut off the dog chain thing as well. I put a little glue around the holes I cut to make sure the fabric doesn't fray over time. You can see I keep an extra nylon bolt and nut in the little front pocket, along with some extra rubber washers. The pocket behind my digger has my custom made ID chart. I put that on cardboard and then taped over it with clear box tape to make it waterproof since I don't have access to a laminator.

The beauty of this setup is that it's quick and easy to put on and take off and stays on my left hip area so it's out of the way when I'm bending down and doesn't poke my belly. I remember the days when I'd carry my digger in my apron and it would poke me in the gut when I bent down, or fall out without me realizing it and I'd have to back track looking for it. A friend now uses the same tool bet and loves it too. $6 at Home Depot and I think another $2 or so for the belt. Just like the Pro Pointer, it's made life much more easier for me.

I carry the digger in my left hand and everything else goes into the Minelab finds pouch. I also carry one of those old fashioned coin purses with a clasp that sort of twists and lock together to put my coins into and that also goes in the pouch on top of the junk I dig. I wear the pouch on my left hip and the control box for my Sov. on my right hip. Light and easy.
Good luck Gary

I use one of those two pocket cloth aprons from Home Depot that are like $1 or $2. Trash goes in the left pocket, coins in the right. If I get a good old coin I don't want to scratch then it goes in my pants pocket. Actually I usually wear sweats or shorts when hunting for easier bending. Hate wearing blue jeans when I hunt as they are too restrictive. Great thing about those home depot cloth pouches is I just throw it in the washing machine a few times a year when it gets too ratty.

I've heard of some people carrying a small jar with soapy water in it for any good coins they find. Especially for copper or bronze coins it will keep them from degrading quickly as some of them do when exposed to oxygen. They'll take them out, clean them with a tooth brush or something, and then quickly rub olive oil over both faces and the coin's edge to protect it from being exposed to the air. It also brings out the details. A lot of relic hunts use olive oil to show detail on old buttons and such. Works like a charm and protects them.

I bought a butchers' knife scabbard & modified it slightly.

Left the holding tongue in one side to keep the Lesche firmly in place, & cut the other one out. The Pro Pointer sits comfortably next to the Lesche.

Then I cut off the bottom of the scabbard so that all the dirt & crap would fall out away from the clothing.

Works for me!!
