How Do You Carry Your Digger, Probe, & Pin Pointer?

I posted this about a year ago but thought it'd be a fun discussion again to share ideas...

I thought it would be interesting to see how others are carrying their tools in the field. My digger, probe, pin pointer, and ID chart were thrown into various pockets on this holster. I found it for $6 at Home Depot. While I was at it I figured I'd get rid of the hooky looking leather belt I was using and buy a real utility belt for $3 there as well. This setup rests nicely on my left hip out of the way

This holder has a nice big pocket for my digger, another screwdriver holder for my probe, and an elastic pocket that snugly holds my Garrett Pro Pointer without the need to use the holster it came with. The picture doesn't look like it but the pin pointer's pocket is very snug, yet it still allows easy removal and re-insertion of the probe without needing two hands. Same deal with the other tools. I try to make things so I can use just my left hand to remove and use the various items. There's even a big pocket behind the digger pocket that I keep my Sovereign ID chart in should I need to reference it to refresh my memory on something. It doesn't show up well in the picture but you can see something white behind the digger's pocket. While I was at it I also threw an extra nylon bolt/wing nut into the extra pocket should I need that to fix a coil mount bolt in the field. Come to think of it I should probably stick a few extra rubber washers in there as well in case I lose one swapping coils.

This holster is the type that doesn't need a belt. You can stick that part into your pocket if you don't like wearing those. Since the picture I later cut off the dog chain connector and the unneeded cover that folds over the pin pointer's pocket, and I also later cut a hole in the bottom of the pockets for the Pro Pointer and the probe so that they both sit more down into the pockets and stick out the bottom. Works great and I couldn't be happier with this setup.

I'm still using the old two pocket style apron from Home Depot for my finds to go in one pocket and my trash in the other. I prefer using those because it's easy to shake out the dirt, remove the junk, and wash it once in a while should need be. Can't tell you how many years I carried my digger by sticking it in my apron's trash pocket. It would poke me in the belly when bending down, fall out on me without me realizing it, migrate dirt or mud to my shirt or deposit it into the apron, and even my trash would stick to it when I remove the digger sometimes when it was wet out.

The biggest thing for me was making sure none of the pockets would snag or cause me to have to use two hands for removing or replacing a tool. That leads to frustration in the field. I feel it makes no sense to tweak out your machine but not do the same with your tools so everything goes as smooth as possible in the field.

I'd love to see pictures of what others find to be a useful setup for them in the field.

I put my Lesche w/sheath in my back pocket and snap my pro-pointer holder onto my belt. And a seperate pouch for junk etc . . . about as un-complicated as it needs to be.

My best rig to date.

If I'm hunting an area with lots of targets I carry my Lesche and Pro Pointer both in my left hand. If the targets are few and far between I keep them in my finds pouch which is actually a deep hull pouch used for sporting clays/skeet.

I use only 2 tools most of the time.
In the bush relic hunting I carry a shovel in the left hand and detector in the right.
For clad hunting I just use a big screwdriver with a magnetic tip, might put it in my back pocket.
My detector is my pinpointer.
That's it.

Pin pointer on my belt, digger and dew rag in my left hand and nail apron around my waste for good and bad targets. If I am going to be a distance from the car, spare batteries go in my pocket. HH jim tn

Wv62 does that leg outfit cause your detector to sound off ??? As you swing ??

I have been using a Sunray pouch for a couple years now and am very happy with it. It has a compartment for my digger, my pinpointer is in the main pouch, and the two smaller pockets hold extra batteries and coins I want to seperate from common coins and trash to prevent scratching.
It's made of heavy duty leather and will last me the rest of my life. It isn't the cheapest alternative in pouches, but certainly one of the best out there.

No I haven't had any problems so far with any of my detectors and I didn't change my swing any. Seems to ride pretty good and my tools are pretty handy to get to in the dig position or just standing.

I still use a cash/trash apron.

I carry my detector in my right hand, digger in the left, find in my hoodie pocket. I do not own a pinpointer yet, but will be ordering one soon.

Great looking setup!
I use a re-usable grocery bag as my drop cloth and kneel pad. When done, I put my digging tool into it and roll it up so that the wet dirt on it stays in the bag and not in my detector bag when it drys out. While detecting, I hold my digging tool, my pinpointer, and the bag in the same hand. I hold the digging tool by the blade and hide it so as not to freak out any Mom's in the area. The bag is creased in the middle and the V shape facilitates pouring the loose dirt back into the hole. My pinpointer came with a belt loop but I find it quicker to keep it in my hand. When I find a target, and pinpoint it, the pin pointer goes on top of the bag. When the loose dirt is piled on the bag, it'll go off and tell me to stop digging!
Just a way that works for me.

I always wear cargo pants or shorts, plenty room for good finds and trash depending on the weather, carry my digger and my pro pointer snaps onto my detector

Had to make a new addition to get thru the rocky hard packed ground Ive been hunting. Outskirts of the dirt dump is packed very hard from decades of heavy machinery mashing the gravel and soil. The good thing about this condition is that the coins are pretty shallow. I found a 1917 Merc about an inch down in this area. HH. Matt

Hi Ron. I can't help but think that suely that extra weight on that leg will over time cause you changes in your leg joints/tendons and back muscle structure that would effect your well being in some way or other.I know it is a bit of a stretch, and probably only wearing it now and then would take a very long while to occure. I do know that back in 62-63,I worked construction and suffered greatly while having a ruptured disc in my lower back. "Favoring" my left leg due to the pain in my hip and leg I finally found a Dr. that diagnosed my problem correctly and I had surgery. My recovery was somewhat geared in the manner to hopefully regain the length back that I had lost in my left leg. I had "favored " it to the point that it was probably 1/2-3/4" shorter than my right leg due to muscle shrinkage. I finally got both legs leveled up again, and on an even keel but it took awhile and was a bit scary, not knowing what to expect. It is all downhill for most retired folks , and that means it gets more difficult, not easier as the thought may imply to those not being old enough to understand. Us old diggers got to look out for oneanother .Might be good to ask your family Dr. what he thinks of your rig, HH, Charlie
