How do I tell if my 5.75 coil is concentric or widescan ??

When I ordered it several years ago I ordered a HOT DD coil but I am wondering if it really is. I notice most of the pics of the DD coils have a sticker on them that say Widescan. I see some pics of the HOT 5.75 that is just black so I am concerned...

the SN on mine is C15004... I am betting the C is for concentric. I know it's been too long to do anything about it, I am not even sure who I bought it from now... dang it.

My 5.75 coil says concentric on the big sticker. And also the ser number starts with a C.

Hmmm thanks... I may have to buy another coil.

Julien, DD coils will give a double beep on shallow targets. Pass a dime across the coil about an inch or two away and see what it does. You might have to vary the speed a bit to get the effect.

The concentric will pinpoint in the middle, the widescan (DD) will pinpoint off the front center or back center. Most of the ones I've seen have a red dot either in the center (concentric) or in the front (DD) ... but looking at the concentric I have now, the dot is part of the decal.

Since you have the serial number, try calling the factory and see if they can cross check it from records.

Yes, apparently they put a C in front of the serial number to designate "coil" versus having a serial number without a prefix on the main unit (control box).

My DD has the red pinpoint dot near the front end of the coil.

The first concentrics werent marked because it was the "only" 575 coil at the time. All of the Widescan coils are marked "Widescan" so it it doesnt have a label, its concentric.

I'll still try the double beep thing and compare it to how it responds front to back. There was no label or dot on this one... maybe it is an early widescan before the label... I know it's what I ordered... just can't remember where I ordered it.

I'll let you know what I figure out.

It gives a double beep on both the dime and the quarter but it double beeps both side to side and front to back swinging... should a DD coil double beep when swung over the target front to back. I knew that a nail would double beep when detected lengthwise and I knew that some of my machines give two or more beeps on a shallow target... it is one of the things I hated about conductive sounds on the Explorer, a shallow target would pratcically sing a song. Is that just because of the DD coil? A concentric wont do this?

I couln't really tell a lot of difference in the pinpointing, it would pinpoint all the way to the front and back of the coil and a little beyond but it did seem a little stronger in the center.

Thanks,

Julien

I'd try raising the coil until it started to loose the target, then with it just close enough to be repeatable, see if it beeps with side ways swings over the full front to back length of the coil or if it is more centered right over the middle.

I tried my little concentric with the Tejon, with a quarter sitting on the snow and the coil raised around 8 inches, I can get a nice small center zone that it hits on; swinging side to side or front to back. I'm only sweeping the coil a little more than the width of the coil as I'm raising it to see where it starts going away. The target zone is smaller when approaching the height limit with the concentric. If I'm only an inch or so above the quarter, I get a double beep; one as each side of the coil cross the quarter.

Unfortunately I don't have the 5.75 widescan to actually test it. I know the cleansweep will hit from front to back as will the 12 x 10.
