How do I shorten lower rod?

I'm not to mechanical, but I guess I would take out the button clip inside then saw evenly, but how do I make new hole for the button clip to go through? should I just carve it out?
I think alot of the heavier detectors come too long, if I could have the detector hanging down loose it would be much more comfortable than straining to keep it elevated.

If your doing any cutting a plumber type pipe cutter works well...
As far making the holes easy to side it in upper rod, mark and use proper size drill bit..Most units have multiple holes to satisy most heights...They do make tall and short man rods and perhaps you have a tall mans rod on your unit..

Thank you, I think I can handle it now. No I think I have the standard poles, I'm 6' with regular arm length and I have a treasure Baron thats pretty heavy, but I figure if I shorten it so I can just let it hang loose and keep my elbow close to my side I can swing for alot longer.
