How do I find Rings with a Sovereign Elite

Launor

New member
I have a Sovereign Elite and I have had great success finding coins at both the beach and parks but am not finding any rings. I want to discriminate out pull tabs since there are quite a few where I search but still be able to find gold/silver rings. My settings are auto sensitivity, disc mode, fixed tone, 10" coil. Is there any way to hear a difference between pull tabs and a similar but good target? I have not used the variable tone setting at all.

Also, I have been contemplating buying a 5" coil and am curious if there is any real difference between the SunRay and the EXcelerator. There is a large difference in price. Again, my goal is to find rings!

Thanks much! Norm

Hi Norm. The fact of the matter is You have to dig pulltabs to find rings. If you turn your discrimination all the way up, you will find rings....but they will only be silver. Ask any of the Sovereign pros like RICK ND or Adam socal. The minute you start discriminating anything other then Iron, you will defenitly loose out on many "gold" finds. heck, if it was that easy, there would'nt be any gold left to find. If it was'nt for the "pull tab" I think this hobby would have burn't out along time ago.
Hope this helps.

Hey Launor, If you have not read the book by Clive James Clynick on the Sov/Excal, you need to get copy. Look at the icons at the top of this forum. It's a righteous read and he will teach you some things that work much better than the way you are currently set up. I don't know much about the Sov, but run an Excal. He does teach a couple of tricks using the Sov to notch out the pull-tabs, but you do run the risk of missing some gold. Order a copy. I would also highly recommend water hunting secrets of the pros. I water hunt, but see you have an interest in beach hunting. Look also at the websight The Golden Olde. Good luck

Norm,

First thing is put the tones to variable and take it out of fixed if you want the gold rings and coins without so much trash. Next thing is when you know your tones in variable take it out of auto sensitivity so you get more depth.
Now if you want gold rings and don't want to miss any you have to dig every positive signals as others have told you as they can read anywhere. Now if you don't want to dig everything and want a good chance of finding gold rings you want to dig more of the nickle and alum foil type reading that have a smoother sound to them than a piece of alum foil or pull tabs. My best gold ring read like a beaver tail on the meter, but sounded like a nickle. plus was deeper sounding than a normal pull tab would read. This is the main reason you want to learn it in variable tones to know which tones you want and which tone you want to walk away from. Single tone you will have to dig everything.

Simple , first the coil has to actually go over a ring and second you have to have the skill to know if the reading you get when your coil goes over this imaginary ring is actually a ring or trash!.

So where is the best places to look? I like the beach but is it better to search the water edge or up on the sand where folks lay in the sun??

I have found 3 silver rings but no gold. I have recently started searching without discrimination and using variable tones. I have a 10 inch coil but may get a 5 inch.

Thanks,
Launor

Like RP pointed out , you have to pass over a gold ring first , say you were digging every signal regardless of tone or reading , you would have a lot of junk before you would have a ring , they are there but unfortunately they just jump into your pouch , and they share similar characteristics as foily kinda junk ,which seems to be everywhere .........good luck ,, it will come but lots of other suff will come too ...........
