How do I clean metal?

I found a what I thought was a rock that indicated metal in it quite a while ago. I finally decided to hit it with a hammer and found a very interesting piece of iron or steel., What is the best way to clean it so I do not destroy the marking on both sides its about 3 inches in diameter and 3/8 inch thick.
