How did the CTX get its name?

I guess their guard wallabies at the ML headquarters pulled random letters from a fish tank.

I think, based upon no reason whatsoever, that it stands for "Coin-Treasure-eXtreme."

I got the wrong model then... I wanted the RFS: Ring Find Sell.
Still don't get the 3030 part.

Minelab has always loved putting wild numbers on to their detector names. Heck their very first detector was called the "gold seeker 15000".

Nothing in this online reference:

https://findwords.info/term/ctx

to CTX being part of the CTX3030 metal detector but it does say that there's CTX (explosive-detection device)

I was working at Minelab at the time so if I recall correctly, a bit of background. When the GPX4000 was in development, the current machine was the GP3500, so the next one was going to be the GP4000. It just didn't look right, and I wanted the next evolution of machine to be slightly different, so I suggested the GPX fomat and everyone liked it. When asked "what does the X mean" I joked "Xtra stuff", and the name stuck.

When it came to naming the new coin machine (3030 as we know it today), the guy in charge of marketing asked me what does GPX mean, as he liked the naming format, i.e. three letters and four numbers. I said Gold Prospector Xtra. This then became Coin Treasure Xtra, and someone added the 3030 and the rest is history....

Let’s face it,the swashbuckling red X just looks cool! Kinda like in the automotive world,Z is meant to indicate performance. X does the same thing here.

And Nenad...thanks for what you do. Before Minelab I didn’t quite know how detecting could be,my two have been fabulous! I’m kicking around getting the ML wireless system for my Explorer2 since the CTX has me spoiled by not being tethered....

Thanks Nenad for the answer. Very cool that our social network here includes the creators.
IDXMonster - I agree about the X. I screwed up though and cleaned my housing with a rag that had a bit of WD40 on it and it wiped the screen printing off. Maybe Minelab should make a black nylon housing protection cover with the X on it so I can get it back.
