How deep

7centsworth

Well-known member
What is the average depth an x-terra 70 will id a penny at and a quarter? AS I am about to purchase one. And will a 70 go deeper than a 50 as i have a 50? Thanks.

I have found several pennies at an honest7". Deepest quarter ...probably 4".

Since you already own an X-50, I don't think you want to rely on what other's "average" depth might be. All of our soil matrix and detecting habits vary. I suggest the best way to determine how deep the 70 will hunt is to compare it to your 50. Then add in a little bit for being able to more finely adjust the Sensitivity. Add a little bit for being able to more finely adjust the NC. And, add a little bit more for being able to more finely adjust (or autotrack) the GB. The 70 simply has more functionality. (multiple tones and the capability of using the 3 kHz coil, to name just two of my favorites) And, in my opinion, some of that functionality will equate to more depth. HH Randy

has found dimes at a measured 6" and quarters at a measured 7" in an older church yard. That was using the 6"DD HF coil. I have a test garden with a clad quarter a measured 10" and the stock coil will hit it with a soft repeatable signal, It will also hit with the same soft repeatable signal a nickle at 8", dime and penny at 7" that are also in my test garden. These hits could very well of been missed if you had a number of targets in the ground where they could mask the planted coins, but the Xterras are very good machines. Right now I'm seriously thinking about buying an Etrac but at times have second thoughts on whether the Etrac will actually go deeper. It might but won't be by much. HH John

the other day when I found that barber it was 8"............now in my coin garden I have various coins all buried at 7" and they are on large plastic plates so they cannot sink, if they do it will be pretty slow, I can hit them all easy with my 3khz coil, penny, dime, quarter

You say you can hit them , but do they id good. I just bought a 70 should have it in about week and a half.

With the X-50 and using the 10.5 DD 7.5 kHz coil I've dug several copper pennies and silver dimes in the 10" to 12" range, but I was in real mild ground that had GB's #'s at the high end of the scale and also their was very little trash at those places. The numbers were jumping around most times. When I'm in areas that have older coins that are 5" and deeper I rely more on the tones then I do on the numbers and if you want to find deep old nickels, don't even look at the numbers.

You guys are sure finding them deeper than I am. With the stock coil on the X-T 70 I've found a single penny at 6", everything else was 5" or less, mostly well under 4 inches. With the 6" DD HF coil my deepest coin find so far was about 5 3/8th" with a fair amt. in the 5" range, all pennies or dimes. Of course my ground seems to be saturated with either old iron & tin or else with pulltabs, can slaw and melted aluminum foil and or shell casings. It generally ground tracks in the middle twenties. None of which is very helpful for finding deeper coins...

What part of the country are you in and how low or high is your GB?

In my area (Central NC) we have lots of red clay. I have seen my GB be anywhere from low 20's to upper 50's. My average depth on good solid hits is around 4-5". I have found them deeper than that but that is my average, Beale.

That is about what I average with my 50. My deepest being a penny at 8 inches in a gravel driveway.
