How Deep on a Mason Jar Lid?

DiggerLee

Using a CZ-3D with a 10 1/2 inch standard coil, properly ground balanced on maximum sensitivity, in all-metal mode, how deep do you think the top of a mason jar can be detected? I believe the lid and the screw-on ring that would be quite a bit of metal. Thanks. Lee

Not sure, but if we let our imaginations go on this one you could probably have 20 or 30 volunteers to help you look. I know I hit these things while coin hunting in discrimination modes at 10 and 12 inches. I would guess you might hit them at two feet running all metal, but that is just a guess. I hope somebody who has looked for a cache will jump in with more info. That last story I heard had a guy finding one at just over a foot in discrimination mode after a contractor had removed about a foot of dirt from the site. Good luck, and let us know how this turns out.

Gee I didn't know guys collected mason jar lids..((just kidding))....my friend......My guesstimate would be 18 inches or so just for the lid.( found a walking half at 16 with a CZ5...Now filled with silver coins is a different story and perhaps 2 feet plus...Only problem it would cover a lot of area and most would leave it lie thinking it was a horse shoe or the like and have no idea if it would overload and give that signal due to the depth but on the ground sure would...

I found an old chromed gas cap at a measured 18 inches in my front yard. A little smaller in diameter than a mason jar lid, but more total mass. The CZ was telling me it was there. I dug a foot down and said to my self "No Way". Later when I got my first Tesoro and it also told me it was there, I got out the CZ6a and it said yup, still there, good and solid; mid-tone (must have been the nickle and chrome in the plating). Got out the garden shovel and dug a bigger hole, going slowly deeper until I saw the flat chrome side up, just starting to show itself. Tape rule said 18 inches. Deepest thing I've dug that was located with a detector!
