HOW deep do you find coins with 5x10

I use it for nuggets and small surface metals. It is not as deep for coins as the 7.5 or 3khz coils. It does have an advantage in highly mineralized ground though. 4-5 inches.

Each of the X-Terra coils are designed with certain "criteria" in mind. In other words, some are just better than others for specific jobs. The higher frequency elliptical fulfills a need for many nugget hunters and other low conductive targets. (e.g. beach hunting) It is lightweight, covers more "area" than the 9-inch concentrics or smaller 6-inch coils. And, the DD design is preferred by those hunting in highly mineralized areas. I don't live near beaches nor do I live near an area that has the opportunity to hunt gold. And my soil is moderately mineralized. Although I woulnd't consider the elliptical coil to be "poor", as a coin shooter, I feel there are other X-Terra coil choices that are a better fit for my particular needs. HH Randy

X-TERRA: Which is the right type of coil to use?
There are two issues to consider - frequency and coil type and size. Your choice of coil will depend on the type of ground you want to search and the types of targets you wish to find. Double-D coils are best suited to mineralised ground. A 10.5" Double-D coil is well suited to beach detecting. Double-D coils provide the best depth. Concentric coils suit soils that are cluttered with many individual targets - both wanted and unwanted. Pinpointing is sharper on concentric coils.

High frequency coils, such as the 18.75 kHz 10" x 5" elliptical coil, are recommended for gold hunting and for searching productive ancient sites where low conductivity items are more likely to be found. High frequency detecting can result in an increased tendency to signal more ferrous (unwanted) items. Smaller 6" coils are ideal for finding jewellery in manicured lawns, cluttered sites where wanted and unwanted targets might be located very close to each other, gold nugget hunting in rocky areas and working in shallow streams.

My friend says, that he digs easily silver coin I Krone diameter 21mm from 10 inches.
This I would say is not bad.

Rabbit

G'day Rabbit,

I use it a bit..on the goldfields and the beach mainly which are mineralised where I live.
Not always, I hunted coins with it last Sunday and did well.
On the beach I pulled an Aussie $1 coin out of wet sand at 7".
In the soil last week I pulled an old copper halfpenny out from an inch below that.
...it will depend on how big the target is eg. a big iron relic can be picked up very deep.
I have given up chasing a few targets that were big and very deep as the ground was too hard and it was late in day ( I was tired).
Santa is bringing me the 6" DD HF and I cant wait to get that little one on for the trashy areas.
Happy hunting from Downunder.

So, you're saying that you pulled the copper half penny from about 8", with the 5X10? Just need to know as 8" would be ideal for Civil War relic hunting around here.

Yep 8"...in slightly moist soil....Sensitivity at 28. Tracking on.
Of course depth depends on how high that you can turn the sensitivity up.
If you have Sens. at 12-15 I doubt it would go that deep (but I may stand corrected)
I normally run Sens. as high as she will go without falsing when hunting for old coins and stuff.
Great coil.

It is a great coil...I dont get to the beach much and I dont live near goldfields, so I mainly use the 10x5 when I am coin hunting in trashy areas...thus I keep sensitivity fairly low (9 - 15) and still get acceptable depth (for me), about 3 - 5 inches. I find it separates targets well and the ID is pretty good too. I like it !

Read the linked post below. This was using the 5 x 10 HF coil in a soil that is not very good for depth, and the signal was very solid on both audio report and visual ID. Because the coin signal was so solid & strong I believe a depth of 10 inches would have easily been possible.

The coin is copper:

Mass 2.5 g (0.080 troy oz)
Diameter 19.05 mm (0.750 in)
Thickness 1.55 mm (0.061 in)

Thank you BarnacleBill for 10 inch depth confirmation. It looks I am going to buy XT705. After some testing, I found that 10,5

I like the coil and get plenty of depth and have dug rusty nails at 10" easy and pennies in the 6 to 8" range.
