How common is losing sound on the Xterra-70

I recently purchased a used Xterra-70 and the sound only works intermittently (so far it works with headphones). Does anyone know how much Minelab charges to fix this issue? Please let me know?

Thanks,

Shane

I had it happen only couldn't hear it with head phones either. ID worked but no sound It was either the springs on the battery compartment were compressed a bit on one side or the batteries I did the springs firs as I thought the batteries were new. However I also changed the batteries and every thing was good. Never had the problem again. Just be very careful when replacing the batteries. If you drop them in it could compress the springs. Also when I transported min in my vehicle I always laid the detector on its side with the battery compartment down, which didn't allow the batteries to bounce on the springs. Maybe that was a bit anal but never had another problem.

Yeah, that was one of the problems I had with my 30 a few years back. It seem to crop up a bit at the time. Just send it back to Minelab with a description of the problem. They'll sort it out in short order. I assume that it is still under warranty? If it is, it will only cost you the freight cost to send it in. If you bought it from a local dealer, then just take it back to him.

One of my 50XT's was doing something very similar, modified the battery door and all is well. The two small tits on the battery door that make the connections to the batteries need to be raised up just slightly. To do this just add a little solder ball to each tit. Be careful not to apply to much heat, you may melt the plastic. Minelab did this to another of my 50's and it worked fine. My 70 is new so the door has been changed from the factory. If your 70 is a few years old it may need to be modified. Very easy to do! Just look and see how much the tits protrude, if they are almost flat just add a little solder.

Or put a bit more tension on the springs at the other end of the battery compartment. I ain't saying that battery connection is your problem. But when my X-70 shut off for no apparent reason, I "stretched" the springs a tiny bit and the problem never returned. Recognize you are working on a sophisticated piece of electronics and make sure you are very careful to not overdo it! And, make sure you use a reputable brand of battery. Some of the "off brand" cells come up a bit short......literally.

As I a thr said, be aware of how you place the batteries in the compartment and how you transport the detector. And if you are going to be shipping the detector......remove the batteries before you ship it. JMHO HH Randy

Thanks for the battery tips! My external speaker on my X-70 also works intermittantly, but the headphones always work fine. I thought the problem was the headphone jack and not my external speaker and not my battery compartment. But I will check my battery compartment more carefully now.

It's the plug for your headphones mine does the same thing
Maybe its a little dirty

Thanks for all the great info. I'll check the battery compartment because I remember dropping the batteries into the slot and this may have compressed the springs. So far the sound is still working through the headphones. The dealer I bought it from was willing to have it fixed but I just got it and wanted to hunt with it for a while and hopefully the problem will be an easy fix.

Perhaps a tech can help you out..Sounds like the headphone plug in assembly is malfunctioning and not releasing when the headphone jack removed...Minelab U.S.A. is easy to work with with knowlegable info...Well worth the call...

Thanks to both of you and YES that's the problem! It's the Headphone Jack. Either a little dirty or not releasing.

Yes contact Minelab. Or fix it yourself?

I've been checking out the Xterra and here is the problem. First the sound works fine with headphones. When I take the headphone jack out of the headphone jack the sound stops working without headphones. If I turn the detector off then back on the sound works on the detector. I have a couple of questions. 1. Will it be okay to run it this way? 2. Why will the Xterra only work with one set of my headphones ? I have two sets of Calrads with stereo and mono switch, a set of Treasurewise wit stereo and mono and one set of Timberwolves with stereo and mono. You guessed it the Timberwolves are the only set that works with the Xterra but why. I think I'm really going to enjoy this detector (it hits hard on coins and is light enough to swing all day).

Thanks for all the responses so far,

Shane

If you hunt with headphones all the time (like most of us), it won't hurt to use it as is. But I wouldn't if it were mine and my dealer offered to help. If the only problem you were having was that it worked with the Timberwolves, and I didn't know the X-Terra better, I'd say it is an impedance mismatch. But there are a lot of guys using those "less expensive" lower impedance headphones with success. So that ain't it! If the only problem was that the speaker didn't work after unplugging the headphones, I'd say don't worry about it as you probably use headphones anyway. But something isn't right. If it isn't the jack assembly itself, I'd bet it is a software glitch. Otherwise what would make the speaker work when it reboots? Again, if it were mine, I'd be back to the dealer asking him to make it right. Or, I'd send it to Minelab and let them service it. JMHO HH Randy

what I found was what Randy referred to as impedance mismatch ( I think). When using a lightweight pair of headphones which had 32 ohms impedance, I had to run the threshold up to 13 before I could even hear it. When using the 150 ohm Killer B's I could hear it at 2. And without any headphones the threshold had to be up to about 12 before it became "a good volume". It was very weak below that and any background noise at all seemed to override it. This is the only detector I have ever had a problem with low impedance headphones, and I've had a bunch.
