How come we never have any tricks posted telling how to overcome those pesky steel bottle caps....

I have to laugh and resist the urge to post "get an E-Trac" every time I read a thread on the other brands forums giving tricks and tips on IDing steel caps.
And most blame the DD coils for all their machines failures rather than the discriminating ability or lack there of .Nothing like digging a pile of beer and pop bottle caps that ID as quarters:cry:
Go :minelab:

If your talking about the old rusty ones Ray I know what you mean. I was hunting with another guy at an old place that had maybe a .01% chance for clad and I think I've found 1 newer aluminum pull tab at this spot out of 100 old coins.

He hit a signal with his machine and asked me to run mine over and give a listen. I could tell exactly what it was and told him so. He told me he was getting a dime reading. I'll get a nickel reading one way and null out on the 90 with those things. A long way from a dime reading on the E-Trac anyway.

Although E-Trac and the Explores have unique software (X-Y axis) to help ID rusty pop tops, it IS a well known fact that DD and SEF's unique winding configuration do add to the problem of rusty pop tops as IDing as quarters on many other machines. The problem is easily verified by replacing the DD with a concentric coil and the problem goes away...... on the detectors I have tried anyway.

Funny, I used to dig them a lot with my Whites, but I don't think I have dug a single one since I got the E-Trac.

I never thought about it till now,but it has been a long time since i dug a bottle cap!

In the first two months i had my ETrac "first ML" i found more finds than in the two years with a different machine. More finds and no more running to the trash can to unload a full pouch of trash during a hunt. I can live with that.

Well the steel caps are getting scarcer....I've dug my share to eliminate them! Where I'm at it seems as they come in more like wheaties than quarters I still dig a few but even before I dig them I pretty much know that is what I am going to find. I do that just to get a feel of the area I'm working in. In the old park where Doug and I have made some good finds the old steel caps generally are no deeper than 4". When we first went to this park I dug a bunch of them because I was just learning my E-Trac....still am learning to tell the truth . I now recognize what I call that "scratchy tone" so I don't dig them very often anymore.

Hey guy's, Maybe these caps are getting scarce because the other brands are clearing them out for us minelab owners. Hopefully they continue to help us poor e-trac'ers out. HH. to all

The only rusted caps I have ever dug with my Ex XS II, were the ones that had the lead foil liners in them. And any others, had coins mixed in with them. Have not had a chance to play with my Etrac yet, ground is frozen.....NGE

The trick is to dig em anyway! If it sounds good dig it, even it it sounds a little off dig it. Those iffy signals from being the classic signal sure have helped my finds bag out a lot!

I have never dug a steel cap using the Minelab coins pattern and just a few using Andys pattern, but now the aluminum caps still give me problems once in awhile.
I am starting to learn though that using more disc instead of less is helping me find more keepers in these hammered to death places I hunt because of the Etracs excellent trash/coin separation.:)

I have only dug two and I have had my ETrac for over a year now, its beaver tails that read as a nickel that is a problem.

Are rusted steel bottle caps still in the ground???? Ever since I got my E-trac I thought they all magically disappeared since I dont find them any more. The E-trac seems to prefer the old deep coins instead:bouncy:

Ha! I had almost forgotten about all the bottle caps I used to dig as I cant think of the last time I pulled one up. That's just a really nice thought to think that we are kind enough to leave them in the ground so all the other guys have something to dig! GO GET Em Larry!!

 I do dig some deep ones on purpose when I'm hunting in prime ground, but the V3i gives a positive ID on them every time. It's the single frequency machines with the DD/SEF coils that have the headaches.
