How come there is only one probe manufacturer?

I am just curious how come only one company makes a target probe for metal detectors? There are several companies that make just about every other item for all brands of detectors including coils, headphones, rain covers, harnesses etc. But only one company that makes a probe. Now that they do not make a probe for the minelab explorer series anymore it seems some one would start producing them. I do not believe it would infringe on any copyright laws because several companies manufacture coils for all different machines and a probe is basically a miniature coil right? For what a used x-1 explorer series probe is going for when they come up for sale it seems like it would be worth while for some company or some one to start producing them. Any opinions?

Hi,
Probes are a very special "niche" product.
The vast majority gets along without one and people that have used them either love or hate them - nothing in between.
I personally feel that most detectors are already as heavy as need be without adding further weight to them - I`m happy to shave off as many grams as I can so mounting one of those gadgets would seem counter productive.
But as I said, there are people that love them - but their number is small and being so would not warrant smart businessmen to invest into a company for competing with SunRay.

I think Skookum is probably right on. I've wondered how the Sunrays would sell if they were available for pretty much all detectors. I really like the one on my MXT and would buy several for my Tesoros if they offered them.

Agreed , it's a very small market , less than those who use them seem to realize.
In my local group of about 45 or 50 members I have never seen anyone use one and there are plenty who can afford them. Personally , the weight and the cost are both detrimental as is the specific use for each type of detector. All the manufacturers are behind the 8 ball already with Garrett's Propointer and noone seems to be making much ground on their market share with the new pinpointer intros. Fisher's has flopped and Minelab's is too expensive and they're giving them away with new detectors just to get some on the market. Everyone is pricing them all around $180 which is still less than a probe and Garrett continues to show the way. The long term effect is going to be forcing Garrett to raise their price because they won't ignore the good business behind doing that for too long.

I use a Sun Ray probe on all my detectors they make probes for, those that they don't or those I just want to try out i use the Uni Probe that is built into the headphones which to me has more depth, but is not a disc probe so it see all metal. These Uni Probes are more expensive than the Garrett or the Sun Ray, but if it will find targets faster so I can detect more when I go out and not give up and leave a good find because i cant find it it is well worth it.
I feel the Sun Ray Probes for the Explorers and E Trac were getting to expensive to make is why they quite making them and be hard to sell.
