How can I tune-up ground balance correctly?

DennisCTX

New member
Dear sirs,
I have some questions regarding the ground balance on the CTX 3030.
I read the instruction, but I was not able to understand it completely. I hope you can help me.
From what I understood: when I turn on a metal detector and the ground balance option isn

Once you perform noise cancel your CTX 3030 will automatically adjust the machine to track the ground for you. If you choose to manual GB push the GB button and engage GB by pushing the menu button. A green check will appear in the enable GB box. Once the box is checked to enable GB press the down button to highlight theGB option. There should be a message appear that GB is in progress. Find a clean area and pump your coil up and down. The audio message will get quieter as you pump your coil. When GB has been completed you will hear and see a message verifying GB complete. If GB does not take then start over. I use my pin-point button to find an area free of metal. Do not GB on the beach. If for some reason you can not get the machine to GB make sure you disengage the GB option by going back to the top and push the menu/select button to clear the GB option box. I use manual GB when relic hunting in this TN. red clay iron infested ground and it makes a big difference in my ground. You may really be confused now. I know how but can't explain crap. Maybe someone else can simplify the process for you better. HH :minelab:  Yes once the GB is disabled your machine will go back to auto.

I was in the midst of writing a response and had a phone call.... when I got back to the computer, I see hershey1 had already done a good job of answering your questions. But since I had most of it written, I decided to go ahead and make the post.

From what I understood: when I turn on a metal detector and the ground balance option isnt switched on, the CTX 3030 adjusts the ground balance automatically (as it was in E- Trac.) Am I right? Please correct if not.

You are correct. When GB is NOT enabled, the CTX 3030 will neutralize the effects of mineralization, on the fly.

Would it be a different situation if I choose the ground balance option, but dont tune-up GB by lowering and lifting the coil?
If you enable GB and Start GB, but do not "bob the coil" you will be ground balancing the CTX 3030 with a level based on where ever the coil is located when the process stops. If you happen to be sweeping the coil or have it over a metallic object, this will not provide the proper ground phase setting for the soil.

Finally in case the ground balance option is switched on and GB is tuned up by lowering and lifting the coil, would the CTX adjust the GB itself or it will be a fixed value?
When you are "bobbing" the coil, the CTX 3030 processes the "difference" between the soil and the air, and sets a ground phase based on the soil that is under the coil at that time. It will remain set at that level until you either ground balance again, or disable the ground balance option.

And in case I decide to switch off the GB option after above mentioned manipulations, will CTX start self-adjusting or fixed value of BG remain?
When you turn off "GB Enable", you will go back to the default mode of neutralizing the effects of mineralization on the fly. (I refer to it as Tracking, but Minelab does not on the FBS units) If you switch off your CTX 3030 with GB enabled, the next time you turn it on, the GB level will be set at the same level it was when you turned it off.

Hershey1, Randy thank you a lot for such thorough answers to my questions. I tried to get any help on Russian forums but all my attempts ended with zero result. It's just luck that I stumbled across the two of you. So if any questions of the kind come up I'd know where to search for the answers from now on. Regards. Dennis
