How can I tell when the target is a hot rock....

because it sounds good but when I get down to where it's supposed to be the only thing making noise on the probe is a rock. I did notice when I get them that the crosshair is pegged up in the upper right corner and has a higher pitch than a coin. Am I interpreting them correctly? Is there any way of blocking them out on the explorer? Could I just edit out the upper right corner with a tiny little square?

You would risk losing silver. usually hot rocks don't repeat well and they have a kind of scratchy uneven sound. With a little practice you should be able to tell them from a good target. I surprised you have problems with them. I live in an area that has lots of hot rocks. They drive me nuts with my Tesoro and I seldom ever find on with the Explorer.
Are you using Iron mask?

if you check them in the non-motion pinpoint mode? HH, George (MN)

Should be able to tell them by sound, high right corner almost off the screen, with that pingy washed out sound, and also the way they seldon pinpoint. they tend to sound louder than the depth indicator says they are, Dont think I would try discing them out, but I suppose if you use a small curser and put it in the very top right corner it might work.. might screw up large cent and quarter hits though

and when I get down to where they are supposed to be the loud sound they were at the surface turns into a faint distant sound.

Sounds like you have rocks with unusually heavy mineral content. I have found rocks here that will even react to the bullseye probe and some that can even be picked up with a magnet but I can still hunt without digging them most of the time. There isn't much you can do as cancelling them out would also block good targets. Spend some time at it and you should be able to get to the point where you can tell the difference between them and a good target.
Good luck!
