How accurate is depth reading on MXT ?

Dears!
How much to trust MXT on depth reading?

Again and again I get the following:

" +74 1 cent 1`` ".

In reality I dig out a can from 5`` below. Today it happened four or five times.

Today`s loot : $0.01 total. Two soccer fields in the park. 6.30 A.M. - 10.00 A.M.

Welcome to treasure hunting a la New York!

P.S. In the first place, it is beyond my understanding - how cans can get 5`` below ground in a soccer field in New York? It is not a small heavy coin!

Mirco,

You need to know how detectors determine depth. Really depth meters are just signal strength meters. The mxt was calibrated to read coin sized objects with the stock 9.5 coil. Smaller objects will read deeper than they are and larger targets will read more shallow than they are. That is because a very shallow small target and a deep large target have the same signal strength. When you get that 74 reading and it says the target is 5" deep raise your coil . A can will still give a reading with the coil 6" to 12" above the ground if it were a penny the signal would be lost. Also when you use a coil other than the 9.5 you will see the depth reading is usually off some.

There are many books out there like Jeff Fosters that explain these things. I don't have the book. Have you ever tried doing a search on this forum or just go back and read the old posts. I enjoy doing both of these and keep learning. I don't believe there are many questions that could be asked that have not already been answered on this forum. Good luck, Rob

Don't be sorry, I didn't mean not to ask questions, please ask. I just was trying to tell you were to find good info. Rob
