Hothead and Excelerator

I had a 5" Excelerator on back order from Kellyco, but finally came in and it was the 5" HotHead Ferret. Kellyco says that it is the exact same coil with a different label, but I thought that the Excelerator was a DD and the HotHead Ferret was concentric. Am I wrong? Thanks in advance for any information.

The same thing happened to me. They swore it was the same coil but I sent it back anyway and waited on the excelerator(5 inch) It did come in recently and it really does a great job in trashy areas. In a recent post I think Monte said it was the same coil. However this was after I had demanded the excelerator and I don't think Monty is wrong but I just feel better getting what I ordered.HH AF

The 5" EXcelerator coil has been a super performer. If I removed the coil's sticker, it would work just the same. No change in performance after a new sticker is applied, and in your case that new sticker says Hot Head "Ferret". But the 5" is a 5" and this coil (I was told) has only had a name/sticker change. It's still the excellent performing 5" Double-D (widescan) coil. Fantastic depth of detection for such a small coil, too! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)">

Could have been "sticker shock" but I didn't mention that they couldn't adequately explain why they were selling two different coils of the same size. The excelerator is made in Germany and the other one is made ?????? They said at the time that they were waiting for the German shipment so I naturally assumed the hotshot is made by someone else. The forum has hyped the excelerator for some time now and by golly thats exactly what I wanted. I got it and I am happy with it. I don't know if I would have been happy with the hotshot. I didn't have enought money to find out. AF

Steve,
Funny you should mention this. Below is a copy of an e-mail from KellyCo. As I had the same experience. Rest assured it is an Excellerator.
Butch,
I received your e-mail concerning the 5

Yes but....
If you look at the technical diagrams of the HotHead on Kellyco's web site, it is a concentric coil. The Excelerator is touted as a little DD coil. I think Kellyco has great customer service, but they have gotten a little bit short and crappy with me on the phone when i've tried to discuss these issues. I just had a problem with my 12.5 Excelerator and when I asked for my money back, they wouldn't discuss it. They did offer to upgrade me to the 14 Excelerator for the same price though. I know that I paid 79 bucks for the Excelerator, but if you look at the HotHead Ferret on Kellyco it sells for 69 bucks. I just have a feeling I'm getting the wool pulled over my eyes. We're military stationed in England, so every time there is a shipping issue it turns into a real pain in the butt.
Is the HotHead for MXT a little DD and I'm incorrect, or is this really a totally different coil and I'm being gullible. Thanks in advance.

The Hot Head for the Garrett is a completely different coil, it is a concentric design for the older GTA and CX Garrett models.
If you would prefer a refund on the 12.5 Excelerator, I will arrange that, just let me know.

and I know that I like to have a clear unsderstanding of things myself.
You said "HotShot" coil and I think you were referring to "Hot Head" coils. "Hot Head" is a name used by Kellyco for their aftermarket accessory coils. "Hot Shot" is a name used for some aftermarket coils offered by Jimmy "Sierra" products.
"Hot Head" coils have been made by different manufacturers for Kellyco through the years, but carried the "Hot Head" label. The smaller coils for <EM>'ferreting out'</EM> good stuff amongst trash were Hot Head<EM>"Ferret"</EM> coils. Even thought the 5" EXcelerator coil has been popular with that description, I think they desired to simply rename it which would promote it's <EM>'ferretting abilities'</EM> even though it remains a Double-D design.
I think you would have been fine with a different decaled coil, but glad to hear you're pleased with what you have. Like I have said, the 5" <EM>EXcellerret</EM> (EXcelerator/Ferret <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> ) and MXT make a great combination!

No JW, I'm just asking questions....
If the HotHead is the same thing or not, I just want to make sure I'm getting a good quality coil. If it's a DD and not a concentric then that's fine. I didn't know, so I was asking for advice from other MXT users.
Forgive me for being a bit apprehensive. So far with my MXT order, I've received a detector with a broken shaft (S bar), a renamed coil and a defective coil. All of these situations have been addressed satisfactorily but they are taking time. I've not complained to you and I'm being patient, but when I asked the young lady you passed me to for the RMA, she said that refund was not an option and that you were sending me a new coil when they came in a couple of weeks. So please understand when I'm asking fellow detectorists about this situation, because it's obviously not uncommon. From everything that I've heard about Detech coils from both sides of the pond, it is hit and miss sometimes. When you do get one that is working well they are brilliant, but a lot of them do ship without being QA'd. That's when I talked to you again and you told me you'd sort the defective coil situation. I've been buying from you guys for over 10 years and have always been happy, but please understand that every when I have to ship things back it's from all the way across the Atlantic, so I'm just trying to determine if it would be better to put the money from these two Detechs toward a Whites coil. I know you guys do a lot of business, and I've always been pleased with your service in the past, but I'm just looking for the fastest and most effecient way to get properly working gear/correct coil so the transaction phase will be over and I can carry on with the hobby portion of detecting. I have no problems with Kellyco and will continue to be a loyal customer.
Hope you understand....

THANK YOU-- FINALLY!!
Could have saved a lot of this banter back in July if you had been clearer. See this thread below and my comment # 6 down- you actually agree now. Back then you said "We use both labels" whatever that meant then. Now I guess it's clear:

KellyCo could avoid a lot of sticker confusion if they would only explain the sticker differences on the KellyCo website. Or even if it was explained to the customer when they called to order one. This would really go a long way in mitigating any misunderstandings as to what coil has actually been purchased.
Just to let you (and everyone else know) I'll be taking my Ferret/Excellerator coil to the Diggin' In Virginia II dig and using it exclusively in each and every hut I dig. I like the way the coil pinpoints and discriminates and it is very versatile.

I agree Butch. Kellyco needs to be more informative on a product that could be questioned. I spent several weeks in the process of trying to get the excelerator coil and it ended up costing me the shipback charges to ship the HotHead ferret back to Kellyco which was 4.55. They sent me back a check for 3.85 for shipping. I'm not worried about the 70 cents. I guess that covers their trouble to handle it. I notice there is almost no reports on how well the Ferret works(except yours). I guess that will come later. I spent my money for an Excelerator and thats what I now have and its a great little coil and I am well pleased with it.

You will find reports (especially from Monte) as to some of the field user results of the Excellerator Coil. It is a good coil, I like it a lot.

It wasn't the excelerator coils I was talking about. Where are the field test on the Hothead Ferret?? hh AF

Just got back from a few days off, so this is a little late. I wasn't aware who it was that told you "refund wasn't an option " until after I talked to your better half today and looked up the RMA records. "Not an option" is no longer in that customer svc rep's vocabulary concerning Excelerators/HotHeads.
Your 14" Excelerator is going out tuesday, and I hope the USPS gets it to you in time for your rally.

Super customer service.
JW,
Thanks much for your great help sorting out all of these issues. By the way, no matter what sticker is on the 5" Excelerator/HotHead it is still an excellent little coil. After all the back and forth via email and my apprehension, I took the HotHead out to detect. It's deepseeking, stable and offers nice seperation in these iron laden fields. I'm well pleased with it. Thanks again, and I look forward to our next transaction.
