HOT SHOT VS EXCELLERATOR

I'm interested in getting another coil for depth. I've been looking at the 12" Hot Shot and the 12.5 or 14" Excellerator. Can anyone give me the pro/cons of one over the other?
Thanks and take care.

Just as apples and oranges are both fruit, the Hot Shot and the EXcelerator are both coils. However, the Hot Shot coil is a concentric wound coil and the EXcelerators are DD coils. Marketing information aside, in a nut shell, which one works best for you may depend where you live and the mineralization of the ground you are hunting. If the mineralization is higher than 65-70, then you would fare better with the DD coils. They are designed to perform with less chatter than the concentric coils in highly mineralized soil. Another thing to consider is the shape of the detection pattern. Again, marketing aside, the DD coil penetrates straight down into the soil, taking full advantage of the diameter of the coil. A concentric coil has more of a funnel shaped penetration, creating the need to be more aware of overlapping your swaths. The soil I hunt here in the midwest is mineralized in the 50's and 60's. I always use a DD coil and have since owning several Minelabs. I have never hunted with my stock 9.5 inch Whites concentric that came on my MXT. I use only DD coils as I feel they are superior to the concentric in the manner and locations I hunt. Just my two cents worth.

Dale,
Don't know about the hot shot but will say that I have a 14 inch excelerator and it is an awesome coil. It gets more depth than the stock , separates worlds better, and runs much smoother. I have not taken the coil off since I bought it and have to say it is super. I went to several places I hit hard with the stock coil and in three trips pulled up over 15 dollars that the stock missed. Even in areas where minerals are not a problem the big coil beats the stock coil hands down in all departments. I wish I could help more with the hotshot but honestly don't know a thing about it. If it is anything like the stock coil Then I would definately say get the excelerator.

I read where you would like to get more "depth" but you didn't indicate what types of targets you're hunting for, the type of ground you're hunting over, and just what sort of "depth" you are getting now and what you expect to get.
I can appreciate the desire to want to get a little better performance in some applications, and one point of improvement might be a little added depth of detection. Too often, however, I have read posts of exaggerated depth gains with such and such a coil and I know that many people get misled .... then let down.
Going to any larger-than-stock coil should only be considered when you are going to be looking for larger targets and/or when you are working areas with minimal numbers targets. Due to the larger generated electromagnetic field, using a larger coil can put you at a disadvantage if a site is too densly populated with good and bad targets as this can cause too much masking.
On small, coin-size targets, and depending upon the ground mineralization you're hunting and the set-up used with the detector, a larger-than-stock coil might provide only

I will soon be able to get back to testing the 12.5 inch EXcelerator that I promised ya 'all I would review earlier this spring. Take care and HH.

Hey Richard, I received my first one in early February, and have put it through a lot of tests. I now have a second one on the way so I can make some comparisons between the two. I wanted to do this as I had found a big discrepancy in the two 14 inchers I tested early on. I believe I saw the 12.5 incher listed on KellyCo, but do not know that they are commercially available for shipping yet. They may be waiting for me to finalize the field tests, I should have my information ready to post within the next week or 10 days.
