Hot Rocks

Hello , this is only my second year metal detecting and I have found some nice coins and relics , but does anyone know what exactly these "Hot rocks" are ? They give my ATP a screaming signal that makes me think I'm standing over the Holy Grail. They are non magnetic, light as a feather and have a very corse, rough feel to them. Reminds me of a grinding wheel. Is this carborandum maybe? I find these in the farm fields mostly. So far I think I've dug about 10 of them. Are they some type of mineral deposit that mixes with the fertilizers maybe ?
I am just curios as to what they really are.....

Thanks for any help.

Wish I could help but I can't even give you a good guess, maybe if there is a college or university near where you live you could take them in the geology department and let them check it out.

This could well be way off the mark, but over here in the UK one of our biggest problems on farmland is 'coke' its when old steam engines took over from horses, during a days ploughing or baling or what ever they had been doing they use to empty the fireboxes on the ground, its one of the biggest problems we can have as it can be picked up by detectors as a good signal, some more so that other, you cannot discriminate them out or notch them out because you could loose some of the good targets that we are after.

What made me mention the coke theory is that you mentioned farmland, and that is the locations of course that steam power would be as it took over from the humble horse before modern powered tractors took over,In the UK we use to use 2 steam powered traction engines at either end of a field and a plough was attached by a massive steel wire from a drum under the engine and they dragged the plough backwards and forwards all day long ,this increased farm productivity and the days of using heavy horses basically came to a end.

We have a massive big problem with coke that is dumped this way on fields, thats my theory about what you are finding, blame modern man and his modern invention the steam plough

Thanks Mega, yes these were found in farm fields , where I found several in a small area. Possibly like you say where they emptied the firebox. Fantastic info , Thanks :)
