Hot Rocks or What?

Ronk

Active member
Ever since this hot dry weather something strange is happening. When I scan an area to make sure there is no metal so I can ground balance...after I dig the hole and then scan I always get a good signal even at max disc. There are no signals in the dirt I remove. When I scan the hole in all metal all I get is a slight null or constant threshold. My ground is extremely rocky and I was wondering if hot rocks are causing this. There is nothing wrong with my detector and I know how to ground balance.
Any ideas?

Could it be that in mineralized soils a hole is an area of much lower mineralzation ???

Maybe...but I forgot to mention that it is in the motion disc mode when it happens.I just don't understand why at Max disc it still gets a good signal. If I turn the Sensitivity down the signal will get a little weaker but it's still there. If I drop a coin in the whole it sounds the same.I'll have to do some more investigation on it.I think I'll try another detector to see what happens. Our ground has never been this dry before so maybe I'll fill the hole with water and test it that way.

The traditional method to ferret out most hotrocks is to get a good signal in disc ( as you have)
Then scan signal in all-metal (pinpoint mode). If no signal in AM/PP. Its a hotrock. This second step does not require that a hole be dug.

I agree with TD most of the time. There are times that the rocks are really hot. Those in PP give a weak signal.... but you can normally still run them across your coil and find them. Sounds like too much sensitivity and you are picking up concentrations of mineralization. Depends on where you are as well. We all have Hot Rocks.... but in shallow or rocky areas they are more apt to produce a signal. I get the same signals in a field, but ive learned the tones on my machine and they are VERY distinct as to where they hit and what they sound like. Most you will get from hemitite or magnatite.

Dew is correct.
I also forgot to add that usually a hot rock will give a loud (weird boinging/hollow/not solid coin) sound. But when you use pinpoint/all-metal, the signal is weak. Foil will do this also. But, a hot rock will read real high in the coin area on the target ID. Foil will not.
What can I say, I forgot some info, been suffering with a chronic back problem for 9 days:)
Thanks Dew for keeping me on my toes......anything but on my back.....lol

Nothing except a tooth ache compared to back pain. Sorry man. NP on the info we all share what we can.

Maybe you're running your sensitivity too high. What happens when you back down the sensitivity?
