Hot Rocks - Ground balance

The weather Hasn' t been great lately. Ground is frozen and air is damp. I' ve had my mxt out for a short time twice and it shows hot rock everywhere I go. Went to a completely different area several miles away and had the same hot rock display. walk all over and couldn' t' find a clean place to ground balance. Tried both 950 and 5.3 coils . Could dampness, cold temp, or frozen ground cause this. Worked fine before.

No, the weather shouldn't make any difference. What did you have your gain set to?

Thank you Nancy. Finally got the gain to 4. I was worried about sufficient power. Been on the same ground before and didn't remember having the problem trying to ground balance.

So, did turning the gain down help out? HH, Nancy

ive posted this before i think , i live in nevada -home of the hot rocks and the reason i truly love the mxt in all forms (pro now)is when it says hot rock 99.99 % of the time its right and i have dug a million stones before i beleived it .YMMV

I neat trick I read on another forum is if you can't find a good spot to ground balance hold the MXT at waist level when turning on leave ground switch on tracking then switch to lock before placing search coil to the ground, the ground balance will be on 50. If you turn on the MXT with switch on lock before turning on it will be on 80, this works on the M6 too.

dan93 That is a really nice feature. Our ground here reads 80-81difficult 50 would be mild gound. The engineers were thinking when they designed it.

if you place an MXT in 'Lock' prior to turning it on, the start-up Ground Phase setting is '83.'

The '50' start up is good for getting underway and let the detector's automated GB track up to the ground conditions where you are.

If you're in a somewhat mineralized area, such as a rocky, torn-up sidewalk, but there are a lot of iron nails and such and you can't find a good spot to get a Ground Balance, that's where I often use the turn-on '83' GB setting (turning it on in 'Lock') as that will generally be sufficient t deal with the ground and let m hunt until I find a clear spot to get 'proper' GB setting.

Often, this will also help deal with some of the hot rock issues. Of course, if you have a close-to-proper GB and get a lot of Hot Rock read-outs, it just might be that you have a lot of 'Hot Rocks' in your area.
