Hot fun hunt...

I went back to that hunted out school site on township land. Spent the morning picking through junk. I ended up with about three wheat backs, the St. Christopher medal, a mystery coin/token in very bad shape the size of a half dollar, and a heavily plated kids "gold" ring (had me going until I put the loop on it). It was so hot I decided to call it a day at 2:30.

On the way home I took some back roads and ended up going past another old school. This one is privately owned. I have driven past this place probably 15 times and never find anyone home. Well, there was a gray-haired lady working in the flower beds as I drove up. She said, "Sure, go ahead and don't worry about hurting the 'prairie grass'." Two hot and sunny hours later, I was almost falling over. It was good though! I found the two nice IH's one is an 1866! The two "jewelry" pieces were in the same hole, the round thing with red stone and the sword, can't figure how they worked together though. That is a flat button with the boat and tree. Also found around five wheat backs.

Remember to dig carefully! The two cent piece was also found at the second school site. I am sorry to give you guys the creeps - I hate it when I gouge a coin, especially an oldie. I felt a little better once I saw the other side - it is covered with green-crap-crusty corrosion.

Top it off with the woman giving me permission to come back even if she was not there! I probably only covered a third of the area. The site has been hit hard but I don't think an Explorer has been in there. She said the school was in operation from the 1860's to the 1960's - that is a long time for a one-room schoolhouse.

Take care and HH - BF

I like those old school sites because you just never know what kids had in their pockets. The old ball fields often produced a good find or two because most people only hit around the school for some reason. I find a lot of surface finds too, like marbles, some of them can be pretty old. If the school is to old ive found you wont find too much just because they didnt carry a lot of money and a lot of times didnt even go to school all day because of the farm work. At those sites i tend to pick up a lot more jewerly or pocket knives than coins. Good finds BF.

Nice finds BF.:clapping: Sounds like you might have a good spot if you think no other Minelab has been in there. Good luck on your next trip back. HH.

Nice finds fang. The ground here is getting hard to dig in places. I've been marking up more coins lately just trying to get at them. GL and HH.

I believe that is an Acacia Shriners pin, the one with the sword and crescent moon that is.

Nice finds BF, I live in one room school house that I converted to a residence long before I took up this hobby. I've never found anything older than a wheat cent here and no silver. It's very possible that it was detected before I bought it.

A two center is somewhere near the top of my wish list.

Congrats:thumbup:

This was hard to hear so I apologize in advance. Two guys around here run a jewelry store. They were detector dealers back in the 1960's. They assured me that all of the school sites have been hunted hard. They said that back when the school sites had never seen a detector, it was common to have to make trips back to the car because your pouch got too heavy with coins. Filling half of a large coffee can in a day! Note that there was no clad in the early '60's. They said they found all sorts of oldies too.

Sorry man, I know how hard this is to hear. I just wanted you to hear what it was like at a non-hunted school.

Take care and HH - BF
