Horse in Horseshoe Buckle?

Hello all, This buckle maybe no more then a kids toy, but from the site I retrieved it from, I have to ask some question. ( an old civil war camp ) It has " HICKOK / USA " on the back. It appears to be made of some sort of pot metal, or cast, & looks to have some sort of plating, possibly gold, as it shines pretty good in spots.

The Questions:
Could this be from the civl war era?
Could it be part of a civil war uniform?
Does GOLD ever get covered by gunk?
Any info on what it might be & a date on it, would greatly be apprieated....

What I think you have is a belt buckle made by the Hickok Manufacturing Company of Rochester, N. Y. organized in 1917, which manufactured all sorts of jewelry, tie clasps, cufflinks, and buckles etc. etc.

Thanks SteveC, I have seen several sites mentioning Hickok Jewlery & buckles but, can't find their site. According to what I've read, they've been in business since the early 1900's... Thanks for your info...the plating on the buckle has still got me stumped, but I think it may either be copper or bronze due to the amout of corrosion... Intersting find though considering the site...

This is a little better pic.

I am new to this hobby & have a lot to learn..
I have found that half the fun of Detecting is trying to figure out what it is you have found...lol
