Well I couldn' t think of a possible better place to start than here. I found this full belt in a river bank adjacent to farm fields. My thought based on the age of the trees that separated this large opening to the river was this had to be a crossing at some point years ago. This belt was not more than 4 to 6 inches below the surface of the mud and continually wet for a hundred plus years.I was thinking this is a horse bridle. I will do pictures so you can evaluate.
 
OK finally successful hopefully these pictures help and can give insight and help viewers identify this belt that is from around the civil war era the patent date is 1878 imp on 1884
