.. Well, I met up with a buddy while driving around the Okanagan and we visited some interesting areas before parting ways near horsefly; turns out he picked up an Ace 250 this past winter and hated it. Well, he offered it to me for $100 and.. you can figure out the rest. Wouldn't you know it, right after picking up the GTA 1000 I end up with another Garrett. I'm thinking that I'll sell the GTA and hang onto the Ace. 2 reasons:a) warranty and b) easier to enclose into a waterproof box (which I have). The GTA seems to be more versatile, but I'm mostly into prospecting and the Ace should cover my needs. There ya go.. ugly but true. ..Willy.

Sounds like a plan bud. Great buy on the 250. How could anyone hate the 250, it's such a friendly little feller. :)

He had an Ace 150, which he really liked, that he sold to another guy and figured that the 250 would be better. Turns out that he felt it was too complicated!! Well, I'm not one to judge.. maybe it was for him. As an aside, I found out a little trick for hunting in nasty iron/aluminum trash with a detector that has surface elimination. Seeing as it's basically an intensity 'discriminator', it can be set for the lowest depth and will knock out most cans, big iron, and many large aluminum chunks. Swinging the coil at about 2" of height allows the coins to ring out loud and clear. True, there will be missed stuff left, but some areas are just loaded with large buried iron and surface junk. I was looking for just coins at a few sites that, with a detector set for regular disc., was like listening to a calliope and the surface elimination saved me from digging (and listening to) a lot of deeply buried iron. I was also pressed for time and wasn't into doing a methodical search. ..Willy.

I'll take the GTA off your hands for fifty bucks. I'll even pay poatage. Ok, Seventy five... That trick for iron and aluminum elimination, would that work with the 250 set on pinpointing at lowest depth? Going out Saturday to a heavely coined area. An old abandoned ski run. Don't think it's ever been 'tected. As long as my knees hold out... GET DIRTY

I sent it back to Garrett and they upgraded the chip and/or whatever. Mary said it would take a new board to make it a GTAx. They no longer had any at the time. I would like to own an Infinium but the money is out reach at this time.

Nope, wouldn't work with the Ace 250.. you'd still have to listen and do a lot of figurin'. The thing about the surface elimination function is that the detector 'decides' that any signal over a certain intensity level is a shallow target that must be 'surface eliminated'. This includes surface coins/large junk, as well as large deep objects. What a person is doing, essentially, is digging only weaker signals. ..Willy.

Well, I won't be nugget hunting with it; I have my Fisher Goldstrike or, if necessary, my Compass X100 for doing so. The Ace will essentially be my coin/ring detector. The Ace just doesn't have the sensitivity/adjustability to be an effective nugget detector. ...Willy. PS. I hope I do real well too and thanks for the encouragement.
