there is a vaccent old house 2 houses down from mine, I called the number on the thing out front that says who is selling the house, I left a message and am hoping they call back and let me know if I can detect that yard, it looks like a good place to check. The house next to it looks like a good place to detect too, I hope I can cause it is some place close that I can work on and don't have to drag my kids with me.

If it's a realtor, they probably won't call back. You could get the owners name/address from the courthouse though, or maybe even online if your county has that stuff online. Once you have that, you can lookup the phone number by name.

Or if it's a fizzbo (FSBO - For Sale By Owner), then you already have the number from the sign, of course :)

I would try and look up the info at the county website. A lot of counties now have the GIS mapping on-line. When you find the property you are looking for you can click on the tax map id and it will give you the owner's contact information. (At least in the counties around here)

I'll try asking my neighbor who is a cop, him or his wife might know since they are across from the house, it goes, my house, the cops house, the road, the old house.

I talked to my neighbors wife and she told me the name of the person who owned the house but that it had been forclosed on and a bank owns it now, she said that as long as I don't act like I'm being sneeky and don't leave holes all over the place I should just go detect there and if anyone says anything say I didn't know and not detect there anymore.

That sounds like a plan to me! I say go for it. It helps that she's married to a police officer too ;)

How long has it been vacant?

I'm not exactly sure, maybe 6 months or more, the lawn needs a good mowing. The cops wife said "it's not like they kept the lawn pristine anyways", when I do go detect there I know how to do it so that you can't tell it's been dug.

I would just be careful about spooking a realtor that is showing the property. They may get a little touchy if you suddenly appear from the back yard.

I can see the house from my bedroom window and I don't remember ever seeing a realtor, the only person I have ever seen is some guy the other day who was looking through the windows.

Here's a thought, You could mow the lawn and then detect "to make sure there are no hazards" that could harm neighborhood kids or animals.

Just to be a good neighbor of course.

That's a good idea, I just have to wait for my dad to bring back my gas can so I can fill my mower, he took it to fill it. I like a little grass, it keeps the plugs from falling apart.

It wouldn't spook me ( I am a Realtor) unless you hand big mounds of dirt piled up. Course I would be kicking myself, why didn't I detect the yard.

I had just started detecting it this afternoon when the realtor showed up, he didn't say I couldn't detect there so I still might when he is not around, do they work on the weekends? Also I got permission to hunt around the high school on Sundays when there is'nt a lot of activity.

Realtors work big time on weekends, most of the clients/customers are off on the weekend and have time to look.
