Honest Opinions Requested

I posted this in the "General Discussion" forum tonight.....

******************************************

I have been in private conversations with another member of this group concerning the Legacy 3500. This person bought one and thus far is very pleased. However, I have been reading on a couple of sights that the Legacy 3500 was far more difficult to operate and not as effective as a Garret Ace 250.

I was just about to pull the trigger on buying the Legacy 3500 tonight......but I have decided to ask the masses for your collective opinions.

My typical uses would be:
A) Land hunting - south Texas "gumbo" soil.....very hard when dry.....sticky when wet.
B) Tot lots, parks and school grounds
C) Beach - Gulf of Mexico of Texas - both wet sand and dry sand.....plan on staying out of the salt water for now.
D) Sand Volley Ball courts

To some people, paying $250 or more for a detector is nothing, while those like me look at this as a purchase that requires more thinking and consideration. Don't get me wrong, I'm not destitute.....I'm just an "over thinker and worrier" about where my hard earned money goes.....you know, I want the most bang for my buck. The Legacy 3500 and Ace 250 are the only two units I am considering at this time.....and I'm leaning toward the Legacy.

So having bored you with a long winded rambling.....which of these two units would you recommend, The Bounty Hunter Legacy 3500 or The Garret Ace 250? And why?

Thanks!

HH y'all.

Frank

Save $150 and buy a Tracker IV. Then use the money saved to buy a Garrett Pro Pointer and a decent digging tool. I got my Garden Buddy at Lowe's for $11.

A tracker IV will outperform an Ace 250 hands down. Straight up. Every time. Not much more to say. This is coming from a family that has 2 AT Pros and an Etrac. And a Tracker IV.

MrPopTop, I have the Tracker IV. I am ordering the Pro Pointer. I have a nice hand shovel, an 18" collapsable shovel, a root tool (similar to a screw driver), a hand sand scoop and a long arm sand scoop. Built both of my scoops myself......so far so good.

I'm looking to upgrade my detector and keep the Tracker IV too. I'm looking for target identification help. I have gotten better with my Tracker IV but the "let's buy a new model" bug has bitten me.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna buy the Legacy 3500.

Thanks for the feedback.

HH y'all.

Frank,
Trust me on this one. The Legacy 3500 is a much better detector than the Ace 250. In fact some people say with the 11"DD coil it out performs the Ace 350. It is better for the following reasons;

1. It has a 5 year warranty (Garrett only gives a 2 year warranty on the Ace 250)

2. First Texas the makers of Bounty Hunter, Fisher and Teknetics is second to none when it comes to customer service. (I can tell you personally from my own experience with my Pioneer 505)

3. When searching in highly mineralized ground and in wet sand at saltwater beaches, the Legacy 3500 is the better choice because of it's manual ground balance and better stability (It doesn't chatter as much as the Ace 250).

4. Bounty Hunter detectors are made with pride in the USA by American workers. When you buy First Texas products, you are keeping jobs in this country.

Frank,
I just got my Pioneer 505 back from First Texas Products on Saturday. I sent them the control box along with the coils to tune it. I mentioned to them that sometimes when I pressed the all metal button to pinpoint that it stayed in disc, notch or autonotch mode.
Anyway, they did a top notch job tuning it and they replaced the membrane control\display panel too. The detector is really quiet and stable now. When I took it out detecting today, I used it with the 11"DD coil. I found 3 dimes, 2 nickels, 1 copper cent and 5 zinc cents. The target IDs and target depth readings were right on (very accurate). I noticed that since they tuned it for the coils, it pinpoints more accurately too.
I found the copper cent 8 inches deep and one of the dimes found was 6 inches deep. It was really bad digging though because the ground was swampy and muddy due to all the heavy rainfall we recently received.
By the way, this is a good example of the kind of service that you can expect from First Texas Products. Just another good reason to buy the Legacy 3500 over the Ace 250. HH.

My personal opinion is the bounty hunter 3500 over the ace 250 or maybe even the new teknetics eurotek pro would be worth looking in to.You just cant beat the engineering from First Texas Products,im sure the technology used from the teknetics and fisher products flow over to the newer bounty hunter products as well.

The only thing peculiar about the Legacy was the pinpoint function. Read instructions on this feature. I was hunting beside a guy with my Ace and he told me he was having trouble pinpointing=easy to see by his large holes. I had no instruction manual but figured it out in a few minutes.

Actually pinpointing is easy once you have the manual ground balance set correctly. The only other thing affecting pinpointing is if you have the sensitivity set too high. This will cause your pinpointing to be off too. HH.

I ordered the :bounty: Legacy 3500 and a Garrett Pro Pointer today from Metaldetectors.com.

Now the waiting game starts...........is it here yet? Is it here yet? Is it here yet?

Thanks to EVERYONE for your taking the time to answer my questions, offer suggestions and make recommendations. Trust me when I say I took every one of the suggestions and recommendations and studied them. When I finally made my decision, it was because I determined the 3500 was the best fit for my area and conditions, my hunting style AND the fact that it is a Bounty Hunter model.......and the 5 year warranty!!!

Looking back I realized it didn't take me that long to convince my wife to marry me 36 years ago!! :cheekkiss:

Walt, thanks again for your most valuable input and help!!!

HH y'all.

Frank,
You're welcome. Like you, I just want to get the most bang for my hard earned buck. I went through the same process that you did when I bought my Legacy 3500. In fact if you'll remember correctly, I read your post about upgrading before I bought my Legacy 3500. Your original post only reinforced the conclussion that I came to and that was the Legacy 3500 is the best detector available for the money to hunt in the conditions that we use it in. And by the way, congratulations on the purchase of your new detector. I already know that you're going to love the Legacy 3500. I really enjoy mine. Let me know when you receive it and go out for your first hunt. HH.
