Thanks puddlejumper.
Had several longtime dealers look at it at the Richmond Civil War Show, none had seen anything like it but they said it looked "right". Michael O'Donnell was there, he has taken thousands of relic pictures for books and publications. His opinion was it was pre-1830 militia officer's due to silver color, regular army would be gold color. He said during the period prior to 1830 there was no strict standard for military dress and was probably not an issued item as was prescribed in later years. He said also that he had seen narrow belts used for dress uniforms of that pre-1830 period.
Howard R. Crouch's book about cw artifacts has examples of eagle hat devices with "downward pointing arrows" that he says date to and before that same period in time. Site has yielded 1 piece flat buttons which date to same era by there back marks. That all I know so far, any further information would greatly be appreciated.
Maybe it was from an Irish Regiment......, leprechauns......, yeah that's the ticket.
